The adage that plays that read well don't necessarily play well is painfully real in Herb Gardner's "Conversations With My Father," the Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson's first production of the 1993-94 season at the James A. Doolittle Theatre. This has more to do with form than content, which encompasses some of Gardner's richest writing to date. True to its title, "Conversations" is a barroom play in which most of the action is talk.

South Coast Repertory and "Sunset Boulevard" will take home the most awards--although not the most prominent ones--from the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle awards ceremony next month, it was announced Monday. South Coast captured seven of the competitive awards--more than any other single producer. The five for "Sunset Boulevard," including one for star Glenn Close, surpasses the number of awards for any other single production.

South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa has snagged 10 of this year's Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle award nominations--more than any other theater company. Meanwhile, the giant-sized "Sunset Boulevard" at the Shubert Theatre and "The Tavern" at the intimate Matrix Theatre, both in Los Angeles, were the most honored single productions, with seven nominations apiece. Five different productions contributed to the South Coast Rep nominations, announced Monday.

The giant "Sunset Boulevard" at the Shubert Theatre and the intimate "The Tavern" at the Matrix Theatre received the most nominations--seven apiece--for the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle awards covering 1993 productions, it was announced on Monday. South Coast Repertory snagged more nominations, 10, than any other single theater company. Five different productions contributed to its nominations.

Shakespeare Festival/L.A., the company that has staged free, professional Shakespeare for the past six summers at John Anson Ford Amphitheatre, is moving to a Japanese garden on the grounds of the Veterans Administration in West Los Angeles. The new site already has a new name: Stratford on VAvon. VA--get it? Last fall, the group's artistic director, Ben Donenberg, pulled out of the county-owned John Anson Ford in Hollywood, after a scheduling dispute with the county.

By any sound byte, 1993 has been the year of theatrical rectitude when it comes to political correctness. The changing climate of Los Angeles was reflected in the changing climate of its theater: From Anna Deavere Smith's noncommittal (and non-controversial) piece on the Los Angeles riots, "Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992," commissioned by the Mark Taper Forum, to Culture Clash's raucously politicized "Carpa Clash." Like the city, L.A.'s theater continues to be eclectic, scattershot and full of creative surprise.
