Wide receiver J.J. Birden of the Kansas City Chiefs sensed that he was due for a big game because he was catching a lot of passes in practice. Birden's intuition proved correct. He caught a career-high eight passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns as the Chiefs defeated the Raiders, 27-21, Sunday at the Coliseum to secure home-field advantage for next week's AFC wild-card playoff game against the Raiders.

Steve Walsh connected with Tyrone Williams on a 32-yard touchdown pass with 3:07 to play Monday night, lifting the Chicago Bears to a 21-18 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs before the Chiefs' biggest exhibition crowd in 20 years--75,114. Walsh drove the Bears (3-0) 80 yards in only four plays, aided by two Kansas City penalties. After the touchdown, Walsh passed to Ryan Wetnight for a two-point conversion.

USC has lost one starting inside linebacker for Saturday night's game against Oregon at the Coliseum and may lose another. Keith Davis broke his thumb against Washington last Saturday and will be sidelined for at least a week. Sam Anno suffered a hyper-extended knee and is listed as doubtful by Coach Ted Tollner. Tollner also said that freshman safety Mark Carrier will redshirt this year.

The UCLA men's and women's track teams will compete Friday and Saturday in the Pacific-10 Conference championships at Oregon State in Corvallis. The Bruin men, strong in the dashes and relays, are co-favorites with defending champion Oregon, once again strong in distance running. UCLA's women will be paced by Gail Devers, strong in nearly everything. UCLA's men have the best marks this season in seven events, Oregon in four.

Red-shirt freshman Bill Musgrave threw three touchdown passes, the last with 1:41 to play, Saturday to lead Oregon to a 25-20 come-from-behind nonconference victory over San Diego State. Musgrave, making his home debut, directed the Ducks on a 10-play, 96-yard drive for the winning touchdown, passing 5 yards to Rod Green in the right corner of the end zone. A 32-yard pass to Green and two San Diego State face-mask penalties helped set up the touchdown.

Eddie Anderson returned to the practice field Thursday. But the bigger question remains: Can he return to the playing field Saturday? Anderson, the Raiders' free safety, sat out last week's game because of a pulled groin. He is hoping to play Saturday in the regular-season showdown finale against the Kansas City Chiefs at the Coliseum with a playoff berth possibly on the line for the Raiders. "I feel ready," Anderson said. "I was a little sore today.

D: QUARTERBACKS Milli Vanilli has better chance of making a comeback than Chargers when behind. What's worse? Tolliver's passes? Or the guys trying to catch his passes? C+: RUNNING BACKS They say Rod Bernstine can't block, and he's hurt, so they send him in to block. Ronnie Harmon dazzles, but Marion Butts spends day on his keister. F: RECEIVERS Wouldn't be shocked if Nate Lewis didn't catch a ride home. Nice day: Arthur Cox loses 6 yards on 2 catches and 15 yards for kicking a defender.

If it was anything special for Dave Krieg, he wasn't letting on. Krieg, who played 12 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, played against them for the first time Sunday and led the Kansas City Chiefs to a 26-7 victory. "Just winning the game is satisfying, that's the only thing," said Krieg, who was signed by the Chiefs as a Plan B free agent. "I don't take any special satisfaction in beating the Seahawks because I know how much those guys are hurting over there right now.

The Kansas City Chiefs, winless at Giants Stadium, nearly served up a shutout in ending that streak Sunday. A stingy defense and ball-control attack carried the Chiefs to a 23-7 victory over the New York Jets in a game that was overshadowed by the injury of Jet defensive Dennis Byrd, who suffered some paralysis in his lower body after colliding with teammate on a sack. Kansas City improved to 8-4, good for first place in the AFC West, and ended an 0-6-1 slump at the home of the Giants and Jets.

As of Wednesday, the Chargers still were without a starting running back for Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium. Marion Butts, the normal starter and the NFL's leading rusher, is recovering from a foot sprain. His status is questionable for Sunday and he likely will be kept out of practice all week.
