Jack Crowe quit Sunday as head football coach at the University of Arkansas, one day after the Division I Razorbacks suffered an embarrassing 10-3 loss to The Citadel, a Division I-AA school. Defensive coordinator Joe Kines, an assistant coach for 28 years, was named Crowe's successor. Crowe, 44, was starting his third year as head coach. He was hired Jan. 22, 1990, after Ken Hatfield left Arkansas for Clemson.

Arkansas has penalized football Coach Jack Crowe and one of his assistants, J.B. Grimes, because Grimes held seven teaching sessions during July in violation of NCAA rules, Athletic Director Frank Broyles said. Grimes, the Razorbacks' offensive line coach, was suspended by the school without pay for seven sessions beginning Thursday and will not be eligible for a raise or a bowl bonus next year.

College Football Tim Stowers, football coach at Georgia Southern, does not want to be considered for the same position at Alabama Birmingham. Stowers is the third candidate to withdraw his name from consideration, joining Bobby Wallace, coach of two-time Division II national champion North Alabama, and Alabama assistant Woody McCorvey. Alabama Birmingham is looking for a coach to lead the program from I-AA into I-A starting in 1996.

Fascinating. Two Arkansas football players are charged with improper use of a credit card, and Coach Jack Crowe benches them. Three USC football players are charged with sexual battery, and Coach Larry Smith keeps playing them. When might a hearing take place on campus? Oh, not until sometime after the November court date? But won't the season end in November? Yes it will. It's no surprise to this Angelena. Winning is all that matters at USC. And, of course, improper use of a credit card would be a far more serious affront to USC's sensibilities.

Texas handled a strong wind, Arkansas didn't and that was a major difference Saturday as the 19th-ranked Longhorns blew away the Razorbacks, 49-17. Quarterback Peter Gardere guided Texas to four touchdowns, throwing for one score and running for another, to cap two 80-yard drives into a wind that gusted as high as 38 m.p.h. The victory before 72,657 and a regional television audience raised Texas' record to 4-1, 2-0 in the Southwest Conference.

Darren Lewis gained 113 yards in 23 carries and scored three touchdowns as the Aggies beat the Horned Frogs for the 18th consecutive time before accepting an invitation to play Western Athletic Conference champion Brigham Young in the Holiday Bowl Dec. 29 at San Diego.
