He is expected to be away from coaching for at least a month, team officials said. Del Rio takes over a 7-1 team that is in second place in the AFC West behind 9-0 Kansas City. Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio faces a challenge this week as he prepares for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, power running back Marshawn Lynch and the expected return of receiver Percy Harvin. At least he needn't be concerned about USC's recruiting class. Del Rio, the former USC All-American linebacker, was interviewed by Athletic Director Pat Haden as a possible replacement for fired coach Lane Kiffin. Haden ultimately hired Steve Sarkisian.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller, last season's NFL defensive rookie of the year, was asked to describe the change in defensive coordinators, from Dennis Allen last season to Jack Del Rio now. "We had a fiery coach last year," Miller said. "Coach Del Rio, he's a little bit laid-back. " Del Rio's response? Ah, training camp is young. "I'm going to drive them and push them and demand of them," said the clench-jawed Del Rio, charged with turning around a talented but largely underachieving defense.

By the time Pete Carroll officially said goodbye Monday, USC was in its third day of trying to find his successor. Athletic Director Mike Garrett is considering a list of coaches thought to include Boise State's Chris Petersen, the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars' Jack Del Rio and Oregon Athletic Director Mike Bellotti. Not that Garrett was sharing any information. "I don't talk about my search," Garrett said after Carroll's emotional afternoon news conference at Heritage Hall.

I get a kick out of all the clucking Bruin and Irish fans who decry the return of their nemesis, John Robinson. For example: JR helped put the Trojans on probation (I seem to recall UCLA was on probation too in 1980). . . . JR left the cupboard bare (hmm, didn't Ted Tollner win the Rose Bowl two years later with Robinson's players, including Duane Bickett and Jack Del Rio?). . . . JR is too arrogant (going a combined 11-3 against UCLA and Notre Dame will do that for you). BRIAN ROBINETTE Van Nuys

Denver Broncos Coach John Fox will undergo an aortic heart valve replacement this week and will take a leave of absence from coaching "for at least the next several weeks," the team announced. The surgery will be performed early this week at a hospital in Charlotte, N.C., where Fox has an offseason home. He was in Charlotte on Saturday, as the Broncos have a week off, and was taken to the hospital after experiencing light-headedness and dizziness on the golf course. The surgery will take place either Monday or Tuesday.

It did not take long for unpredictable plot twists to appear in USC's coaching search. During a Monday morning appearance on "The Dan Patrick Show," former NFL coach Tony Dungy said he had been contacted regarding the USC job but that he had no interest. When Patrick asked Dungy whether USC had called him, Dungy said, "They haven't, but as they say, representatives of the organization have called. Your people called my people just to see if you're interested. " On Monday afternoon, the school announced that "individuals posing as USC representatives made overtures to two coaches regarding the Trojans' head coaching position.

Marques Clark could not believe what he was hearing. But it really was happening -- the former Division II Henderson State wide receiver who hadn't played organized football since 2006 was being offered a contract by New Orleans Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis. “It was like I didn't really think he was talking to me," Clark said. "It was an out-of-body experience. I thought, 'Did he really just say that?' And he was staring at me like, 'Yeah, we're going to sign you.' " Clark, 28, says he always dreamed of playing in the NFL while at Henderson State, where he had 91 catches for 1,456 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made two blockbuster announcements in rapid-fire succession this week: Jack Del Rio is out as coach. Shahid Khan will be in as owner. When you change the coach, you change the face of the franchise. But when you change the owner, that can mean a seismic shift — and a lot of people believe that move is the first big step toward the vacant Los Angeles market. It makes sense on one level, with Jacksonville being the league's fourth-smallest market, and L.A. being the nation's second-largest market.
