New Publisher for Chicago Tribune: Tribune Co., owner of the newspaper, said Jack Fuller, 47, will become its publisher. He succeeds John Madigan, 56, who had been publisher since August, 1990. Madigan has been named president and chief operating officer of Tribune Co. Fuller served as editor from 1989 until he succeeded Madigan as president and chief executive of the company in September, 1993. Tribune Co. also operates broadcast stations and produces entertainment programs.

John (Jack) H. Fuller, who ran a family trucking business in Lancaster for 28 years, has died at his Pearblossom residence. He was 82. Fuller died Wednesday of heart failure, his son, Bill Fuller, said. Born Aug. 13, 1908, in Nebraska, Fuller was a teen-ager when he came to California, where he worked in construction and later became a truck driver. In the early 1950s, he started a small trucking business, Reliable Delivery Service in Lancaster, which he operated until the mid-1970s.

A body believed to be that of a 16-year-old girl missing for two weeks was found in a shallow grave in a wooded area, law enforcement officials said in Toms River. The body is "in all likelihood" that of Brittney Gregory, Ocean County Prosecutor Thomas F. Kelaher said. Three officers, including two working on their day off, made the discovery with the help of search dogs. Jack Fuller, 38, a friend of Brittney's father, has been charged in her death.

FitzSimons assumes the title of president from John Madigan, who remains chairman and chief executive, the Chicago-based company said.

Chicago Tribune Editor James D. Squires announced that he will resign, effective Jan. 1, and Executive Editor Jack Fuller was named as his replacement. "My decision was made for two reasons--to ease and expedite the transition to a new era of newspaper leadership, begun this time last year with the appointment of a new president--and to placate my own restless heart," Squires, 46, said in a statement. Squires referred to the appointment last year of Tribune President John W. Madigan.

The founding family of the nation's largest Spanish-language daily newspaper, La Opinion, has hired UBS Investment Bank to find an investor to buy back the 50% stake in the paper owned by Tribune Co. The buyout would end a partnership between Tribune, which also owns the Los Angeles Times, and the Lozano family, which founded La Opinion in 1926. La Opinion is published in Los Angeles and has a circulation of 125,862.

One teen-ager was convicted of second-degree murder and two others were acquitted Wednesday in the "Ace of Spades" strangling of a 16-year-old. A Superior Court jury, after eight days of deliberation, found Michael McDonald, 18, guilty of the Feb. 1, 1992, murder of Alexander Giraldo, a member of a Long Beach Polytechnic High School paramilitary gang known as the Ace of Spades. Schuyler MacPherson, 19, and Bryan Davis, 18, were acquitted.

Tribune Co., owner of the Los Angeles Times, announced Wednesday that Jack Fuller, president of the company's publishing group, would retire and step down from the board of directors at the end of the year. Fuller, 58, helped lead Tribune's acquisition and integration of Times Mirror Co. publications in 2000, said Dennis J. FitzSimons, chairman and chief executive of Tribune. Fuller also was instrumental in recruiting Baltimore Sun Editor John S. Carroll to become editor of The Times.
