The slayings at South Bay fast- food restaurants of two colleagues within six months has cast a pall over an Orange County construction firm. Police, however, do not believe that the two homicides are related. Cheyenne Figueroa, 39, a construction supervisor from Fontana, was shot in the head Tuesday evening minutes after pulling up to a drive-through window at a Jack-in-the-Box in Inglewood to order the No. 5 combo--a Sourdough Jack, fries and a soft drink.

Jack, the round-headed fictional chief executive in Jack-in-the-Box commercials, is not only a hit on television. He's also popular on Wall Street. In the last year, investors have driven the company's stock price up more than 80% - and industry analysts are bullish about the company's future. Jack in the Box Inc.'s profit was up sharply in its recently completed fiscal first quarter, as sales increased at its flagship restaurants and at the company's other brand, Qdoba Mexican Grill.

A Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus jumped a curb on Rosemead Boulevard and crashed through a wall and into the dining room of a Jack-in-the-Box, but no one inside the restaurant was injured, a sheriff's sergeant said. The driver was treated at a hospital for minor injuries after the crash north of Colorado Boulevard in an unincorporated area east of Pasadena, said L.A. County Sheriff's Sgt. Debra Herman. There were no passengers on the bus. The California Highway Patrol was investigating the cause of the crash, Herman said.

With hundreds of its former patrons now dining on MREs in the Persian Gulf, San Diego-based Jack in the Box Inc. is looking for a few good customers. Troop deployments from military facilities in Southern California and elsewhere, poor weather in some markets and a sluggish economy overall prompted the nation's fourth-largest burger chain to lower its same-store sales forecast for its fiscal second quarter, which ends April 13.

What ails Jack in the Box? The nation's fifth largest burger chain has upgraded its food, remodeled its stores and trained its employees in the fine art of customer service. But even though consumers forked over $3 billion for sandwiches, tacos, churros and other food last year, sales are still way below pre-recession levels. Jack in the Box Inc.'s stock remains sluggish and last week the company said its profit in the three months ended April 17 dropped 62% from the same period last year.

Los Angeles police detectives Thursday announced a $50,000 reward in the fatal shooting of a 27-year-old man at a Jack in the Box restaurant in Pico-Union last year in hopes the money will motivate witnesses to come forward. Jesus Eduardo Vargas was riding his bicycle in the 2100 block of West Pico Boulevard about 7:20 p.m. on July 1 when he was confronted by two men. Vargas was then chased inside the fast-food restaurant, where he got into a physical altercation with one of the men in front of the counter, according to a surveillance video released by police.

Former child star Rodney Allen Rippy failed to land on one of Hollywood's most exclusive lists -- that of actors-turned-politicians.  Rippy, who appeared in Jack in the Box commercials in the 1970s, tried his hand at local politics by running for mayor of Compton. Initial election results show that he received only 75 votes. A dozen candidates appeared on the ballot, including current Mayor Eric Perrodin; former Mayor Omar Bradley, whose conviction on corruption charges was overturned last year; several community activists; and some newcomers such urban planner Aja Brown as well as Rippy.  Early results in the hotly contested race showed Brown and Bradley heading into a runoff, apparently signaling an ouster of Perrodin, a deputy district attorney and former Compton police officer who unseated Bradley in 2001.

Jack has risen, hallelujah. After being hit by a bus in a Super Bowl TV/Web commercial Feb. 1, Jack -- the grand-tete CEO-mascot of Jack in the Box -- emerged from his coma March 4, newly inspired. At Jack's direction, the San Diego-based restaurant chain will undertake a brand makeover this spring, including a new logo (Duffy & Partners, Minneapolis), redesigned store environments and a new corporate website that launched Monday. Jack, I feel obliged to point out, is a fictional character.

Recessionary eating isn't always healthful eating, especially when it comes to the $1 value menus pushed by fast-food chains to keep sales growing through the economic slump, according to one health watchdog. Jack in the Box's Junior Bacon Cheeseburger was ranked "the most unhealthful" value item available among the offerings of national fast-food chains, according to an analysis by dietitians with the nonprofit Cancer Project in Washington that is scheduled to be released today.
