Three USC pitchers combined on a five-hitter as the Trojans defeated South Alabama, 3-2, Saturday and advanced to the championship game. It was the second victory of the day for the top-seeded Trojans (43-16), who eliminated Clemson with an 8-5 decision in the day's first game. Rik Currier, Jason Lane (7-1) and Jack Krawczyk combined to strike out 12 batters in USC's victory over South Alabama.

Eric Munson hit two home runs and had three runs batted in as USC defeated visiting Long Beach State, 4-3, Saturday. Seth Etherton pitched eight innings and gave up eight hits to record his second victory of the season. Jack Krawczyk retired the 49ers (1-4) in order in the ninth for his second save. Wes Rachels was three for three for USC (7-1). Jaron Madison had two hits and two RBIs for Long Beach State.

USC shortstop Gabe Alvarez highlighted a six-run eighth inning with a tiebreaking triple in the Trojans' 9-6 comeback victory Thursday over Washington State in the opening game of the Pacific 10 Conference championship series at Dedeaux Field. The winner of the best-of-three baseball series receives an automatic NCAA Regional berth. Alvarez was three for four and teammate Paul Cruz was three for six with three RBIs as the Trojans overcame a 6-3 deficit.

A fight between baseball players from Arizona State and USC in which two players were injured and Sun Devil pitching coach Bob Welch tangled with USC Coach Mike Gillespie is being investigated by the Pacific 10 Conference. Jim Muldoon, associate commissioner of the conference, confirmed Tuesday that a probe of the Sunday incident at USC's Dedeaux Field was ongoing. Welch's involvement, said Arizona State Coach Pat Murphy, came when he heard the words, "Have a drink. You're a drunk."

Stanford and USC split a double-header on Sunday, as the Cardinal won the first game, 7-6, behind the pitching of Chad Hutchinson and the Trojans won the second, 7-4, on the strength of three home runs. Stanford (27-5-1, 12-3 in the Pacific-10 Conference) won two of three in the weekend series at Dedeaux Field to stay atop the conference's Southern Division. USC (28-8, 14-4), ended an eight-game losing streak to Stanford with its victory.

USC broke a 5-5 tie with five runs in the eighth inning and went on to defeat Florida State, 10-8, and remain unbeaten in the Anaheim Hilton & Towers Baseball Classic Saturday at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Field. Marc Mirizzi, Ryan Stromsborg, and David Valdez each had RBI singles in USC's big eighth inning. A bases-loaded walk given up by reliever Scott Proctor gave USC another run, and the fifth came in on a sacrifice fly.

USC held Cal State Fullerton to three hits as the Trojans beat the Titans, 2-0, in nonconference baseball Tuesday at Dedeaux Field. USC, ranked seventh in the nation, scored in the seventh inning when Robb Gorr led off with a single to right and stole second. After Morgan Ensberg walked, Brian Ponchak slashed a single to center to give USC a 1-0 lead. Jason Brown scored in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Eric Munson. Jack Krawczyk picked up his seventh save for USC (23-8).

USC senior right-hander Ben Tucker erased memories of his series-opening performance by pitching seven strong innings in the Trojans' 7-5 victory over Miami Wednesday. Tucker (7-2) gave up five runs, seven hits and struck out four as USC won its third consecutive game. The sixth-seeded Trojans (48-20) will play third-seeded Miami (48-16) again Friday for the right to advance to Saturday's championship game.
