Officials were mistaken about a controversial, fourth-quarter fumble call Saturday that allowed Air Force to defeat Navy, the supervisor of officials for the Big East Conference said. "It is evident that . . . the ball was fumbled by Air Force and recovered by Navy," Daniel E. Wooldridge wrote Navy Athletic Director Jack Lengyel. "Our ruling on this play was incorrect." Two plays after the fumble call was missed, Air Force kicked a field goal to win, 18-16.

The Naval Academy fired Elliot Uzelac as its football coach Monday, two days after his Midshipmen's last-second upset of Army. Navy was 8-25 in three years under Uzelac. The Midshipmen were 2-9 in Uzelac's first season and 3-8 each of the last two years. Uzelac had lost two games to Army before the Navy rallied in the final seconds Saturday for a 19-17 victory. Navy Athletic Director Jack Lengyel defended the firing. "You look at seven consecutive years of losing," Lengyel said.

Refurbishing a battleship was never like this. The Naval Academy hopes to add 48 luxury sky-boxes to 32-year-old Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium by the start of the 1991 football season, according to Athletic Director Jack Lengyel. The Naval Academy Athletic Assn.--the privately funded organization that operates the Navy sports program--signed an agreement Thursday with University Partners to market the boxes and a new club-level seating area.

Elliot Uzelac was fired as Navy's head football coach today, just two days after his Midshipmen upset Army 19-17. Athletic Director Jack Lengyel said the Naval Academy Athletic Assn. will buy out the final year of Uzelac's four-year contract. "Our football program under Coach Uzelac has not progressed to the degree of competitiveness necessary to achieve the success we believe can be accomplished at the Naval Academy.

Ron Adams, architect of Fresno State's stingy defense, was named the Bulldogs' head basketball coach Friday. Adams, 38, succeeded Boyd Grant, who resigned at the end of the season after compiling a record of 194-74 during nine years at Fresno State. Grant's tenure included the 1983 National Invitation Tournament championship.

Gene Stallings, former coach of the Phoenix Cardinals, has been interviewed for the vacant head coaching job at Navy, the Phoenix Gazette reported. The newspaper said Stallings, who owns a ranch in Paris, Tex., was interviewed in Dallas by Jack Lengyel, Navy athletic director. Stallings told the Annapolis Capital: "If I were going to go back to the college level, Navy would be one of the few places I would consider."
