A published report said that the Detroit Pistons' new television commentator, Ron Rothstein, will be hired as coach in 1992, but Chuck Daly said he has made no decision to leave. Chuck Daly has agreed to a contract extension that will keep him coaching the Detroit Pistons through the 1991-92 season, the team said Wednesday. Daly's contract had an option for the 1991-92 season, and he had 15 days after the playoffs concluded to decide whether he would return. Piston spokesman Matt Dobek said that Daly told General Manager Jack McCloskey of his decision in an informal meeting.

Chuck Daly, saying he would miss coaching too much, said Tuesday he will try to lead the Detroit Pistons to a third consecutive NBA championship. Daly turned aside suitors from network television and other NBA teams. Piston General Manager Jack McCloskey announced that Daly would return under a new, multiyear contract. Details of the agreement were not disclosed. Daly had been courted openly since the Pistons won their second consecutive NBA title in June.
