David Teitelbaum, the former CalArts film student who launched his Hollywood career by posing as a TV newsman and crashing last year's Academy Awards, thought he was going legitimate this year. That is, Teitelbaum said, until someone in the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences figured out who he was and revoked the press pass he'd been given to cover Wednesday's ceremonies for The Movie Channel.

Jack Saltzberg never played or coached organized basketball at any level. The closest he came to the NBA Finals was when he once spoke with Kurt Rambis, Mychal Thompson and Kareem. Saltzberg watched all Lakers playoff and Finals games but did not see one regular-season game. No newspaper was interested in his views and neither the Los Angeles Times nor the Orlando Sentinel wanted him as a guest columnist. -- The Lakers are NBA champions because they won four games before the Magic did. Every game the Lakers won, they had more points than the Magic.

CalArts film students Jack Saltzberg and David Teitelbaum, who posed as a bogus TV crew and crashed the Oscar arrivals at the Shrine Auditorium last month, will appear on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson tonight with about seven minutes of their Oscar video and talk about their brief fling as have-nots among the haves. It's just the beginning of the career launching of the spontaneous video duo.

As one who has been attending USC games for 40 years, only one thing has always bothered me about the experience: USC fans booing other teams and their bands when they step on the field. For all the greatness that is USC football, this behavior seems pathetic, especially considering that they are booing student athletes and musicians. They're students, not pros! That being said, it seems kind of OK to boo UCLA . . . and, most definitely Notre Dame . . . and, as long as Ohio State will be in town . . . Jack Saltzberg Sherman Oaks Ohio State receiver Ray Small says the difference between USC and OSU is class.

Jack Saltzberg's letter, "Movies and Stereotypes," in the Jan. 29 Calendar carried erroneous information regarding international terrorism. As a former Israeli operative, Saltzberg believes that Muslims and Arabs should be classified as the major terrorist threat, but the record according to the U.S. Department of State proves otherwise. In its annual report on global terrorism, the Office of Counterterrorism indicated that Latin America and Europe accounted for the greatest number of international terrorist incidents.

TEN REASONS MATT BARKLEY SHOULD ENTER THE UPCOMING NFL DRAFT: 10 . Some guy named Caleb Hanie started for Bears last week. 9. All those kids wearing No. 7 Trojans jerseys are actually fans of T.J. McDonald. 8. Don't worry, the empty trophy cases in Heritage Hall will be filled by the water polo team. 7. Tim Tebow should have a role model. 6. Pete Carroll has already told everyone that your Wonderlic scores are the best he's ever seen.

Forget that: --The Dodgers could have had Tim Raines. --The Angels and Dodgers are both sub-.500 teams in the two worst divisions in baseball. --The Los Angeles Kings, Lakers, Rams, Raiders and, hopefully, the Clippers all will be playing in cities outside L.A. --The Raiders have no quarterbacks. --The Coliseum Commission is hapless. --The Clippers, Kings, Dodgers, Angels, Rams and Raiders stink. Just remember, that Tommy Heinsohn was finally fired and won't be doing commentary next year when the Lakers win the championship!

I hope that Chris Dufresne and the many other critics of Pete Carroll's decision to go with freshman Matt Barkley now will concede that USC's coach knows what he is doing. Dufresne wrote: "Making Barkley's first-ever road trip to a nationally televised game at Ohio Stadium is like sending a first violinist to Carnegie Hall before he has learned to play the entire concerto." Well, that was nothing less than a virtuoso performance by Barkley. To those who knocked Carroll's decision to go with Barkley, I submit that USC also stands for Underestimating Smart Coaching.

Regarding Tuesday night's 94-93 debacle vs. the 76ers: If the Lakers players' collective basketball IQ from that game were to be siphoned into the brain of a sparrow, the bird would fly backward. Scott Jackson Lawndale :: After watching that pathetic fourth-quarter performance against the 76ers, is there anyone still out there who doesn't realize that the Lakers are a seriously flawed team? The problem is obvious: These guys have all of the mental toughness of a lower-division high school team (my apologies to the high school team)

Laila Lalami's subtle assessment that Hollywood is racist toward Arabs and Muslims simply is not true (" 'Bride' Walks Down Aisle of Stereotyping," Counterpunch, Jan. 1). Prior to selling my action script to a major studio, the single and most consistent criticism from producers and studios alike was "the terrorists are Arabs," insinuating that it may be offensive to the Arab community. It mattered none that our script took place in Iraq and our main terrorist had humor, wit, intelligence, charm and a Harvard education.
