For most of the years since 1933, UCLA baseball players have peered into the stands at their home field and smiled at their usual assortment of fans. Moms, dads and girlfriends for sure. But many times, they also nod to disheveled retired Marines, ex-Navy officers with oak-leaf "scrambled eggs" on their caps and proud veterans still wearing camouflage. "When I was there in the '60s, watching us was an outlet for veterans," former Bruins first baseman Rick Ganulin recalled.

Joe Dominguez, football coach at Wilmington Banning High, said Wednesday that his team will not show up for its Nov. 1 game against Dorsey at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Dominguez said he is concerned about the safety of his players and wants the district to move the game to a neutral site. Los Angeles Unified School District officials met with administrators and coaches from both schools Tuesday and changed game time from 8 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. But Dominguez is not satisfied.

Leaving the field after practice on a gloomy and rainy midweek afternoon in Wilmington, the Banning High football team appeared subdued. There was no enthusiastic chatter about the approaching City 4-A Division championship game, no spontaneous yells or defiant remarks. The players seemed more concerned about staying dry than playing their opponent. However, once inside their warm locker room, they let it be known that Saturday's 1 p.m.

UCLA baseball Coach John Savage has one of those enviable problems. While most college baseball coaches juggle staffs diluted by the Major League Baseball draft and damaged by aluminum bats, Savage can arrange his pitching staff for this weekend's regional like a decorator. "We'll decide tomorrow what direction we'll go," Savage said Monday. "We'll look at all the teams in the regional and see who matches up best." Such is the luxury of having four starters: Gerrit Cole (9-2 record, 3.27 earned-run average)

UCLA will appeal a decision that could force it to give up its baseball stadium on land leased from the U.S. veterans' agency. U.S. District Judge S. James Otero rejected a bid by the university and the Brentwood School to overturn his August ruling striking down commercial leases on the Department of Veterans Affairs' sprawling West Los Angeles campus. But he said the schools, which were not involved in the original litigation, could appeal the August decision. Otero's ruling Monday ruling means UCLA's national championship team will stay at Jackie Robinson Stadium, where it has played for nearly 50 years, through the 2014 baseball season and perhaps beyond.

A federal judge ruled Thursday the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs misused its sprawling West Los Angeles campus by leasing land for a hotel laundry, a film studio storage lot and UCLA's baseball stadium, but stopped short of ordering the tenants off the property. U.S. District Judge S. James Otero said the agency had abused its discretion by leasing land for purposes "totally divorced from the provision of healthcare," but delayed enforcement of his order so the government could appeal.

UCLA's baseball team has had its first national championship only for a full day, but starting pitcher Nick Vander Tuig already caught Coach John Savage looking at his recrutiting list on the trip to Westwood. That's the life of a college coach, always preparing for what's next. But Savage might give a moment or two to relish the moment. "My mind's really only on the celebration we are going to have," Savage said with a smirk. PHOTOS: UCLA wins College World Series Savage was referring to the College World Series celebration the Bruins will hold Thursday at 2 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

UCLA pitcher David Berg unlocked the gate to the bullpen at Jackie Robinson Stadium. He took a seat along the rail, staring out at the field. Welcome to the office of Kaprielian, Weiss and Berg. Their motto? "We lock things down," Berg said. James Kaprielian, Zack Weiss and Berg form one of the best bullpen combinations in the nation, UCLA's 1-2-3 finishing kick. Some say it's the best … ever. "It rivals any bullpen at any point in college baseball history," said San Diego Coach Rich Hill, whose team was eliminated by the Bruins in regional play Sunday.

San Diego third baseman Kris Bryant entered the NCAA baseball tournament a potential top-five draft pick. He left with a bottom 10 moment. Bryant was hitting .340 with a nation-leading 31 home runs before a lost weekend at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Bryant went two for 13 in four games. Both were infield singles. “I didn't have the weekend I wanted to,” Bryant said. “I didn't really help my team as much as I wanted to, but sometimes you have to tip your hat to the pitcher and sometimes they make a good pitch.” Bryant's best moment came in a 6-0 loss to UCLA that eliminated the Toreros.

At some point, possibly soon, UCLA Coach John Savage may have "era" attached to his name. The only thing that is lacking at this point is a national title. The Bruins moved a step closer to that with a 6-0 victory over San Diego at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Sunday. Grant Watson gave up one hit through seven innings to put them into the super-regional. UCLA will either play at Cal State Fullerton or host Arizona State in a best-of-three series starting Friday. Watson wasted little time establishing his alpha-dog status.
