Antoine Pettway scored 20 points to lead five Alabama players in double figures as the No. 22 Crimson Tide defeated Jacksonville State, 99-57, Friday night at Tuscaloosa, Ala. Earnest Shelton scored 17 points, Terrance Meade 14, Erwin Dudley 13, and Maurice Williams 10 for Alabama (7-2), which led by as many as 50--at 97-47 with 2:53 left. The Crimson Tide shot 50.8% to 37.3% for Jacksonville State (1-4).

Craig Clayton summed up the situation succinctly: "You hit a guy on a one-two pitch and bad things happen," he said. A three-run home run by Merritt Bowden was officially the game-winning hit of the NCAA Division II championship baseball game Saturday at Paterson Field. Clayton, his teammates and coaches know better. Jacksonville (Ala.) State, which defeated Northridge, 12-8, did not deliver the most important hit of all. The Gamecocks received it.

Bobby Ryan pitched two perfect innings of relief, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo scored the winning run on a balk to beat Slippery Rock (Pa.), 7-6, Thursday night and advance to the championship game of the Division II College World Series at Montgomery, Ala. The Mustangs (37-25) will play for the title tonight against New Haven (Conn.), a 10-6 winner over Jacksonville State (Ala.). Cal Poly's Robert Hale walked with two out in the seventh inning and the score tied, 6-6. He stole second, took third on an error and scored on Kirk Scurpa's balk.

Guard Melvin Allen scored 18 points and made a key layup with 45 seconds left to lead No. 2-ranked Jacksonville State of Alabama over South Dakota State, 74-73, Saturday night in the NCAA Division II championship game. The Gamecocks (31-1) have won 31 straight games. No. 9-ranked South Dakota (26-7) was led by 6-7 center Mark Tetzlaff, the tournament's MVP who had 21 points and 13 rebounds. South Dakota led, 69-64, with two minutes left.

Ruben Ayala had five hits, including a tournament-record four doubles, as UC Riverside stayed alive in the NCAA Division II World Series with a 12-10 victory over Jacksonville State Thursday at Montgomery, Ala. Riverside (38-24-1) will play Jacksonville State (39-12) again today, the winner advancing to Saturday's championship game.

Ruben Ayala stopped hitting and so did the rest of the UC Riverside team Friday in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II World Series at Montgomery, Ala., and as a result, the Highlanders lost to Jacksonville State, 5-2. Tim VanEgmond gave up four hits and struck out 10 as defending champion Jacksonville State (40-12) eliminated the Highlanders (38-25-1) and advanced to today's championship game. The Gamecocks will play Missouri Southern, which beat Longwood (Va.), 9-6.
