Jacquizz Rodgers finished with 145 yards and two touchdowns, and Ryan Katz passed for 260 yards and two touchdowns as host Oregon State (2-2, 1-0) held off Arizona State, 31-28, on Saturday. Rodgers eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the 16th time in his career, scoring on a four-yard run in the first half before breaking off on a 74-yard run to the end zone in the second half to put the game out of reach for Arizona State (2-3, 0-2). Following Rodgers' second touchdown, Arizona State pulled to within three points after the Sun Devils made a two-point conversion following a 21-yard run by Cameron Marshall with less than three minutes left in the game.

Five things to watch this week in college football. 1: USC plays at Oregon State in the Friday night time slot usually reserved for Boise State. No one has to remind Trojans fans of the 2008 loss in Corvallis that ended up costing them a shot at the national title. The good news is Jacquizz Rodgers is now in the NFL. 2: There's a good reason Florida State decided to honor Bobby Bowden last weekend against North Carolina State instead of this weekend against Miami. Bowden had a losing record against the Hurricanes and he joked his tombstone might read "He played Miami.

The challenge facing UCLA this weekend is fairly straightforward. The Bruins must find a way to contain Oregon State tailback Jacquizz Rodgers, one of the leading rushers in the nation. But their strategy for corralling the fidgety-quick freshman seems twisted around. As tackle Brian Price explains: "We have to play slower."

Dietrich Riley wore a Cheshire cat-like grin as he sat on a bench outside Morgan Center at UCLA. His expression was the polar opposite from the hangdog look he carried around spring football practice a year ago. Riley has dealt with the unknown. He had been rushed to a hospital after a head-first collision with California running back Isi Sofele during a 2011 game. To play football again, he needed neck surgery. And there were no guarantees. The kind of direct, point-A-to-point-B path that Riley employed on the field as a hard-hitting safety didn't help him off the field.

Quizz knows Oregon State running back Jacquizz Rodgers is no mystery to the Trojans, but that won't make it easier to contain him. At 5 feet 7 (or shorter), Rodgers darted his way to 186 yards against USC last season, and had a career-best 189 in a victory over Stanford two weeks ago. He is averaging 116 yards rushing a game. USC Coach Pete Carroll this week compared Rodgers with Emmitt Smith, Eric Dickerson and Barry Sanders. "Those guys always knew how to set up the defense," Carroll said.

Three of USC's last four Pacific 10 Conference losses have come to the Oregon schools. What to look for in today's game: On the line: Oregon State manhandled both USC lines, so expect the Ducks to use a similar blueprint in trying to establish a running game and contain the Trojans' offense. Rush to judgment: A jitterbugging freshman, Jacquizz Rodgers, ran all over the Trojans last week. The Ducks' running backs are bigger, more powerful. USC might go more to Stafon Johnson and C.J. Gable.

UCLA won't play in the Rose Bowl game this season, but the Bruins can have a say about who does. Oregon State needs to win out to secure its first January date in Pasadena since 1965. A look at some issues surrounding today's game: Pop quiz: USC flunked its Oregon State quiz, letting running back Jacquizz Rodgers run wild. UCLA has a good defense that would look better if it wasn't always on the field. On their shoulders: Kevin Craft has tested the Bruins' patience, but he's healthy.

The Atlanta Falcons have made the biggest off-season splash to date by dumping three key veterans: defensive end John Abraham, cornerback Dunta Robinson and running back Michael Turner. The news is not stunning since many NFL teams at this time of year decide which high-salaried veterans to release in an effort to bring in younger, lower-priced talent. The club will save nearly $16 million with the moves Then again, it's not often you see a pro football team dump its sacks leader, a top-flight defensive back and one of the franchise's greatest running backs.

The Times' Chris Dufresne unveils his preseason college football top 25, one day (and team) at a time: No. 22 Oregon St. This ranking may seem high for a school that scored three points in the Sun Bowl last year -- and won -- and also loses eight starters on defense. But it's also time Mike Riley's program gets a little benefit-of-doubt love. USC, which lost last year to Oregon State, turns its defensive roster over and no one thinks twice putting the Trojans back in the preseason top 10. Oregon State loses players and gets tossed in the rankings sock drawer.

Oregon State receiver Markus Wheaton tries to sell it. "We have a lot of guys who can make plays," he said. "Any one of them can fill the big-play role. " One guy who is not buying is UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley. He knows full well what Wheaton can do. The first varsity pass Hundley threw at Chandler (Ariz.) Reporting from Corvallis, Ore. This time it wasn't close. USC was in the habit of spotting Oregon State big halftime and third-quarter leads at Reser Stadium, only to rally and then fall short. But on Saturday night, the Trojans could not even manage that. Oregon State walloped No. 20 USC from start to finish en route to a 36-7 victory that continued the Beavers' recent dominance over the Trojans on their home turf. On a chilly night in the Northwest, Oregon State built a 20-0 lead, knocked USC quarterback Matt Barkley out of the game because of a high ankle sprain just before halftime and cruised to its third consecutive home victory over the Trojans.

USC's Chris Galippo knows that his third consecutive start at middle linebacker will be his toughest. Oregon State junior Jacquizz Rodgers is the Pacific 10 Conference's third-leading rusher. "Being the middle linebacker, you take it upon yourself to really shut down the run game," Galippo said Thursday. USC failed to slow Rodgers in two previous games. As a freshman in 2008, Rodgers ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns in 37 carries as the Beavers upset the top-ranked Trojans, 27-21, at Corvallis, Ore. Last season, he gained 113 yards and scored twice in a 42-36 USC victory at the Coliseum.

UCLA found a high-profile running back it could stop ? finally. Oregon State's Jacquizz Rodgers came into the game ranked 14th in rushing in the nation, averaging 105.7 yards per game. He also had a productive history against the Bruins, with 112 yards rushing last season and 144 in 2008. But the Bruins, who have been trampled by some of the best this season, held Rodgers to 67 yards in 14 attempts in their 17-14 victory Saturday. "We knew we were a better defense than we have showed," linebacker Akeem Ayers said.

Defense wins championships, or so goes the cliche. UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel would be happy if it could win just one game this season. The Bruins have been pacifists on defense too often this season ? especially against teams like Oregon State, which has a strong running game. Staff writer Chris Foster looks at the game's key issues and matchups: 'Quizz masters? UCLA has been flattened by some of the best backs in the nation. All week long, the UCLA defensive players talked about building a cage around Oregon State tailback Jacquizz Rodgers. They talked about stopping the big cutback runs that hurt USC earlier this season. It almost worked. Rodgers was discouraged early in Saturday's game at the Rose Bowl but eventually found a rhythm -- and some open space -- leading his team to a 34-6 victory over the Bruins. "We knew we were beating ourselves in the beginning," he said.
