1 Wichita State (34-0, Missouri Valley champion) vs. 16 Play-in winner 1 (below) The Shockers have the experience from last year's run to the Final Four, plus they can shoot, are big and physical, and have a crafty point guard in sophomore Fred VanVleet. 8 Kentucky (24-10, at-large) vs. 9 Kansas State (20-12, at-large) Kentucky has had a disappointing season by Kentucky standards, but the Wildcats remain dangerous, as top-ranked Florida found out in the Southeastern Conference tournament final.

SALT LAKE CITY - There are advantages to having a 6-foot-9 point guard such as Kyle Anderson . That was evident not so much in Anderson's play for UCLA on Thursday as it was in the performance of teammate guard Norman Powell . Powell, a 6-4 junior, matched his season high with 19 points in prodding the No. 25 Bruins to a 69-56 victory over No. 21 Colorado. Powell's play had roots in Anderson's presence. "What is happening is teams are trying to put big guards on Kyle," said Coach Steve Alford , whose team plays Utah on Saturday afternoon.

LAS VEGAS - UCLA will battle history and a less-than-desirable matchup when it faces Arizona State on Thursday in a Pac-12 tournament quarterfinal game at the MGM Grand Arena. The conference's regular-season champion rarely wins the tournament, and UCLA has struggled in splitting two games against the Sun Devils. "We hope it's going to be three games in three nights, but first we have to get past our first opponent," UCLA Coach Ben Howland said Tuesday. The Sun Devils (21-11)

Arizona State easily defeated USC, 79-60, on Thursday night at the Galen Center. BOX SCORE: Arizona State 79, USC 60 It was a season low in points for a USC program that was supposed to be energized by the up-tempo, high-flying style that helped put Coach Andy Enfield on the map at Florida Gulf Coast.

There is no denying the marquee abilities UCLA freshman Zach LaVine can bring to a game. He gave a sparse crowd at Pauley Pavilion a peek of those Sunday. LaVine's 19 points in UCLA's 87-72 Pac-12 Conference victory over Arizona State won't jump off the stat sheet, as he was one of five Bruins in double figures. But what he did during an eight-minute stretch in the first half should get the chatter going around the water cooler. He scored 15 points to fuel a 20-8 run that gave UCLA (13-3 overall, 2-1 in Pac-12 play)
