The Galaxy opens its season Saturday night facing the rival that knocked them out of the playoffs last year: Real Salt Lake. But the Galaxy will field a markedly different team at the StubHub Center after bolstering its ranks with several experienced players during the off-season. The moves were to correct the team's uneven play in 2013. "If there was a weakness last year, it's that we were inconsistent," said Coach Bruce Arena, who last month signed a multiyear contract extension.

When the Galaxy signed Swedish midfielder Stefan Ishizaki this winter, it had one specific goal in mind. “We needed to improve our passing in the midfield,” said Bruce Arena, the team's coach and general manager. “We do that, it allows us to get Robbie Keane close to the goal.” Three starts into his Major League Soccer career Ishizaki is already rewarding Arena's confidence, setting up Keane for the only goal the Galaxy would need in Saturday's 1-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps before an announced crowd 20,847 at StubHub Center.

Over 16 seasons and the 315 games he played in Major League Soccer, Matt Reis' objective was always the same. Block the shot, protect his goal. A four-time All-Star with the New England Revolution, Reis set every goalkeeping record in the club's history and established himself as one of the top keepers in the league. Last year, after tearing his left quadriceps in the playoffs, Reis called it a career and retired at 38. In his tearful retirement speech, Reis likened himself during his early days in MLS to a soccer pioneer.

The Galaxy beat Club Tijuana, 1-0, on Wednesday night to win the first game of their two-game quarterfinal series in the CONCACAF Champions League tournament. Galaxy newcomer Samuel Rosa Goncalves, a Brazilian forward known simply as Samuel, scored in the 11th minute in front of 15,159 at StubHub Center. The Galaxy defense, led by Panamanian goalkeeper Jaime Penedo, spent the rest of the game holding back a Club Tijuana attack that became increasingly zealous in the second half.

To some, being a pro soccer player doesn't look like the most strenuous job in the world. You run a little, kick the ball, walk around and wait for the ball to come back to you, run and kick it again. If that's your take on soccer, then you'll want to watch a new series that will change your mind. The Galaxy has launched its first-ever original Web series, "Be A Pro," which it hopes will help change the culture around fitness, nutrition and soccer. You can view the series on the Galaxy website or the Galaxy Facebook page.

The Galaxy's high-octane offense sputtered to a stop at the worst possible time Thursday, running out of gas just outside Salt Lake City to halt the team's chances for an unprecedented third consecutive Major League Soccer championship. Outplayed and outworked over 120 minutes by a determined Real Salt Lake, the Galaxy was ultimately outscored as well, dropping a 2-0 decision and losing the two-leg Western Conference semifinal, 2-1, on aggregate goals at a frigid Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah.

The Galaxy couldn't have scripted Sunday's game much better. Needing a victory to stay firmly in Major League Soccer's playoff race, the reigning MLS champion prevailed in game it was expected to win by beating last-place Chivas USA, 5-0, at StubHub Center. The Galaxy's goals came early and often despite the 92-degree temperature at game time. The Galaxy's star forwards, Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane, each scored twice and Gyasi Zardes also scored. Donovan tied Jeff Cunningham for the MLS all-time scoring record of 134 regular-season goals.

The Galaxy expected to spend the coming week preparing for the second leg of Major League Soccer's Western Conference final. Instead, the team will spend it preparing for next year. Thursday's 2-0 overtime loss to Real Salt Lake in the conference semifinals not only spoiled the Galaxy's quest for an unprecedented third consecutive MLS title, but it also marked the team's earliest playoff exit since 2008. As for why that happened, there are many ideas and several theories but no sure answers.

The Galaxy is chasing history in the Major League Soccer playoffs. No team has won three consecutive MLS titles, a feat the two-time defending champions can take a big step toward claiming Thursday when the Galaxy meets Real Salt Lake in the second game of a two-leg Western Conference semifinal series in Sandy, Utah (TV: ESPN2, 6 p.m.). History, however, can be fickle. For proof the Galaxy need look no further than its goalkeeper Jaime Penedo, whose own date with destiny ended in disappointment just three weeks ago. Penedo's Panamanian national team went to stoppage time in its final World Cup qualifier needing only to protect a 2-1 lead over the U.S. to keep alive its chances of reaching soccer's biggest stage for the first time.

CHICAGO -- Brek Shea wasted no time giving the U.S. men's soccer team it's biggest lift on Sunday. The backup midfielder entered the CONCACAF Gold Cup championship game at Soldier Field in the 68th minute and 42 seconds later to break a soreless tie. Panama failed to answer and the U.S. secured a 1-0 triumph and its fifth Gold Cup championship in front of a largely pro-USA crowd announced at 57,920. The victory extended the Americans' winning streak to 11 games in 2013, four more than its previous best of seven in a row in 2007, the last time the Americans won a Gold Cup trophy.
