Although it follows one of the roads most taken by family sitcoms — beleaguered single parents, horrible kids — Fox's "I Hate My Teenage Daughter" asks a surprisingly significant question: What happens when people raise their children in a manner that is essentially an attempt to re-parent themselves? It's a smart and relevant premise, given that so many parents of teenagers today came of age during a time of social revelation, in which previously taboo issues, including addiction, abuse and sexual diversity, were discussed in a way that one hopes makes life easier for each subsequent generation.

THE interview with Jaime Pressly was most interesting not particularly for what it said but for what it didn't say ["A New Woman," Nov. 11]. She talks about her new baby and the stresses she has as a businesswoman and mother, but not a word about the father. There was a father someplace, wasn't there? Many commercials feature a mother and kids at the dinner table, with father nowhere in sight, but I think an interview with a parent should not neglect what happened to 50% of the story.

JAIME PRESSLY won the 2007 Emmy for best supporting actress in a comedy series for NBC's "My Name Is Earl." She had her first child this spring, and her fashion line, J'aime, is 5 years old. It's intriguing when actors branch out. It's not as intriguing when people branch out because they've licensed things out. It's more intriguing to me when people go out and do things on their own. [J'aime] is funded solely by me -- there are no private investors, I didn't go to school for this.

Jaime Pressly shows that she wears it well Jaime Pressly huffed and puffed and worked out intensely to get her weight down so she could fit into the skimpy costumes worn by her character, Joy, on "My Name Is Earl." Then the show's writers made her character pregnant. Wearing an uncomfortable "fat suit" on the set had its drawbacks. Not only did it cause Pressly's skin to break out and leave her drenched in sweat, but it also caused her to suffer dizzy spells.

Leave it to 1. Jack Nicholson to work his magic with soprano Renee Fleming on the opening night of the L.A. Philharmonic's fifth season, Oct. 4 at Walt Disney Hall, even though he'd come with two dates, 2. Diane Keaton and Nancy Meyers. Fleming had earlier joined music director Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonic for a program of French and Italian classics.
