It wasn't too long ago that center Jake Brendel was one of the fresh-faced kids on the UCLA football team's offensive line. Now, as a third-year sophomore, he is the veteran in charge. When he looks to his right, he sees nothing but true freshmen: Alex Redmond at right guard and Caleb Benenoch at right tackle. Redmond had been a starter all season and Benenoch was seeing plenty of playing time as a reserve before an injury during last week's game at Utah prompted a line shift.

The season maps out in a way in which goals are achievable, whether it's a spot in the four-team national championship playoff or a Saturday in December when quarterback Brett Hundley is photographed clutching the Heisman Trophy. The Bruins open the season in Virginia, giving East Coast folks a look at the team and the star at the controls of its offense. There is a marquee game against Texas at the Dallas Cowboys' stadium.

UCLA guard Jeff Baca is expected to return to practice this week after missing the last two games with what was called a head injury. Baca was held out against Oregon State at the last minute Saturday. He has been suffering from headaches the last two weeks but was cleared to practice this week after undergoing tests Sunday. Coach Jim Mora was coy, saying only: "We'll get a clearer picture on his future [Monday]. " Mora said that "we don't want to make excuses," but Baca's absence from the lineup did play a role in the Bruins' struggles on the ground against the Beavers.

SAN DIEGO - Brett Hundley's first season running the UCLA offense became the best season a Bruins quarterback has had, at least statistically. Hundley tossed a 22-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Fauria in the second quarter Thursday against Baylor in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl. It broke Cade McNown's single-season record of 3,470 yards, set in 1998. Hundley, a redshirt freshman, had already broken McNown's total offense record and Drew Olson's completion record. Hundley finished the season with 4,095 total yards, 3,740 yards passing and 318 completions.

UCLA senior linebacker Anthony Barr visited a doctor and did not practice Wednesday, less than 24 hours after suffering an undisclosed injury during a team drill. The All-American's injury is not believed to be serious, according to a person close to the football program who was not authorized to discuss the situation publicly. A trainer took Barr's helmet during practice Tuesday after he appeared to collide with an offensive lineman on a running play. Such a move by a trainer is standard protocol if a player exhibits symptoms of a concussion.

HOUSTON — Ka'imi Fairbairn wasn't yet ready to throw blame around. Yes, three of the UCLA freshman kicker's extra-point attempts were blocked Thursday in the Bruins' 49-24 win here against Rice, but he wasn't ready to say how or why that happened. "I don't really want to get into it right now, but I know what I've got to do better," he said after his first collegiate game. "So that's what I'm going to work on this week.
