Jameis Winston is now officially a baseball player. Sure, the Florida State quarterback has played football and baseball for much of his life and has spoken of wanting to play both sports professionally. But most of the nation got to know him as the guy who led the Seminoles to the BCS title this past season. So even though he was good enough at baseball to have been drafted by the Texas Rangers out of high school and is now in his second season as a pitcher/outfielder with Florida State, the phrase "Jameis Winston, baseball player" still sounded kind of funny.

So much for published speculation that findings on the sexual-assault investigation involving Florida State freshman quarterback Jameis Winston would not be released until after this weekend. Willie Meggs, Florida's state attorney,  has scheduled  a Thursday news conference in Tallahassee to address the Winston case. "We think we have exhausted all investigative tools," Meggs said in a story posted on ESPN.com news services. The investigation is focusing on whether Winston sexually assaulted a female student last December, long before he became a national figure.

The attorney for the woman who accused Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston of sexual assault asked Friday for Florida's attorney general to examine the rape investigation and the Tallahassee Police Dept. Patricia Carroll said that detectives failed to interview key witnesses and that DNA tests were unreliable and incomplete. “The bulk of the investigation was into the rape victim,” she said. “I'm looking at an investigation of a rape victim, not a rape suspect. If victims are subjected on an ongoing basis to what this victim was there is a serious problem in the state of Florida and certainly the Tallahassee area.” Carroll said that the lead detective got a search warrant for her client's cellphone and social media accounts but failed to do the same for Winston and his two companions immediately after the accusations were made.

Jameis Winston had just led Florida State to a 45-7 victory over Duke for the ACC title on Saturday, ensuring the Seminoles a spot in the BCS championship game next month. The star quarterback also was just two days removed from learning he would not be charged in a sexual assault investigation that had been looming over his head since last month. ESPN reporter Heather Cox has drawn some criticism - particularly from FSU fans and Winston's lawyer , Tim Jansen, who keeps tweeting about the incident - for focusing more on the latter topic during her postgame interview with Winston.

They started the night with a barrage of pregame fireworks in the Rose Bowl. A few hours later, the rockets really went off. This was not so much a game as a roller coaster. If you are a drama lover, an excitement junkie, you couldn't help but get high on this one. The last 4 1/2 minutes were college football's Space Mountain. There was a 100-yard kickoff return by a Florida State freshman, who is only 5 feet 7, who was a state champion sprinter and who goes by either Kermit Whitfield or Levonte Whitfield.

The ornery BCS expired loudly, perfectly, kicking and screaming into the chilly darkness. The loony BCS took its last breath Monday by taking away the breath of a Rose Bowl filled with chants, chops, dancing and grief. Auburn won. No, Florida State won. Check that, Auburn won. No, wait, by a score of 34-31 blazing in eternal white bulbs above a field littered with glittering confetti and forever memories, Florida State won college football's final BCS national championship. Won with 13 exhausting, crawling seconds remaining.

Until the fourth quarter Monday night, USC versus Texas in 2006 was considered the greatest college football game in the 16-year Bowl Championship Series era, maybe ever. Move over, Trojans and Longhorns, you have company. Eight years later, on the same Rose Bowl field, in the last BCS game ever, Florida State rallied from 18 points down to defeat Auburn, 34-31, before a worn-out crowd of 94,208. The winning score came with 13 seconds left, on a two-yard scoring pass from Jameis Winston to Kelvin Benjamin.

In case you've been living on Mars and hadn't heard: Florida State junior tight end Nick O'Leary is the grandson of golf great Jack Nicklaus . "I mean, it's just like anything else," O'Leary said Friday. "Just he played golf for a living. " Yes, the same way Picasso just painted for a living. O'Leary, at 6 feet 3 and 248 pounds, is bigger than his granddad and has been a key player in the Seminoles' run to Monday night's Bowl Championship Series title game at the Rose Bowl.

On a fine football Saturday night, Jameis Winston proudly took possession of the most prestigious sculpture in American sports, the Heisman Trophy. In the background of all of these accolades, there is a woman who claims he raped her. The victim stated that she was telling the suspect to stop but he didn't. Winston, Florida State's electrifying freshman quarterback, won college football's top award in a New York theater awash in tales of his greatness. Drowned out were the words in a Tallahassee Police Department incident report from Dec. 7, 2012, words and evidence the state attorney judged were not credible enough to take to trial.
