The Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. will change its name to the Big West Conference on July 1, PCAA Commissioner James A. Haney announced Friday. The name change was approved by the conference's council at its spring meeting in San Diego.

Frankly, I totally disagree with the PCAA Council when it says the conference has a name recognition problem. That's nonsense. Now if only I could recall what PCAA stands for, I'd tell you why. Wait, I remember: Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. --but maybe not for long. Seems a majority of the council members are thinking about changing the conference name. They want something a little snazzier, an acronym with sequins, something to attract attention across the country.

Earnest Riggins was fired in May after six seasons as the San Diego State women's basketball coach because he violated NCAA rules by representing a former athlete in dealings with a player agent, the university said in a document released this week. The allegation was contained in a summary of a report the university submitted to the NCAA detailing last spring's school investigation into the incident.
