James Allen Hydrick, a martial arts expert and reputed escape artist who claims to have psychic powers, was sentenced Friday to 17 years in prison for molesting five Huntington Beach boys last year. Hydrick, 30, pleaded guilty to 11 counts of felony child molestation last week in a bargain with prosecutors, who agreed in turn not to seek the maximum 33-year sentence.

Suspected Molester Closely Guarded in Court Suspected child molester James A. Hydrick appeared for arraignment in West Orange County Municipal Court on Friday with five deputy marshals closely guarding him. Hydrick, an expert in karate who faces 13 counts of child molestation, was denied a restraining order for what his attorney called "verbal abuse by deputies" in jail. Municipal Judge Michael Beecher also postponed Hydrick's arraignment until Feb.

The extradition from Georgia of a karate master wanted in Orange County on child molestation charges took place after a Huntington Beach police officer spotted him on a television talk show, Assistant Dist. Atty. Michael Koski said Monday. James A. Hydrick, who was in court here Monday for an arraignment that was delayed until today, had appeared on a Nov. 29 "Sally Jessy Raphael" show, talking about psychic power, when an off-duty police officer recognized him, Koski said.

James A. Hydrick, 29, also faces charges of failing to register as a sex offender in the 1970s and assault and battery, stemming from an incident last August, an Orange County Municipal Court spokeswoman said.
