Chad Wheeler played only a few years of high school football, was a redshirt last season at USC and sat out most of spring practice because of a knee injury. Now, in a major surprise of training camp, a player who has never played a down in college is on track to start at left tackle for the Trojans in their Aug. 29 opener at Hawaii. Wheeler's emergence at the line's most high-profile position is one of several changes for a unit that must protect an inexperienced quarterback and help USC resurrect its running game.

Lane Kiffin does not expect running back Silas Redd to struggle with his transition from Penn State to USC. USC's coach, in radio interviews  Wednesday, said the junior running back's familiarity with a college system should help speed the process once the Trojans begin training camp Monday. Kiffin told ESPN's Colin Cowherd that coaches would spend “extra time around the clock” with Redd as the Trojans prepare for their Sept. 1 season opener against Hawaii. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Redd rushed for 1,241 yards and seven touchdowns in 244 carries last season.

Lane Kiffin's short, tumultuous stay at Tennessee continues to reverberate a year into his tenure at USC, which announced Wednesday that it had received a notice of allegations from the NCAA regarding the football coach's 14 months with the Volunteers. The NCAA conducted a 22-month investigation into Tennessee's men's basketball and football programs. Most of the allegations concern Volunteers basketball Coach Bruce Pearl and his staff. The NCAA alleges that Kiffin "failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance within the football program and failed to monitor the activities regarding compliance of several assistant football coaches ... and an athletics administrator involved with the football program who reported directly or indirectly to Kiffin.

After last week's losing performance at Stanford, USC could not wait to play California on Saturday at the Coliseum. "You go win the next game," Trojans Coach Lane Kiffin said of his players' mind-set, "all of a sudden that game doesn't hurt the same. " Other than perhaps quarterback Matt Barkley, no one felt more beat up after the Stanford loss than USC's offensive and defensive lines. The offensive line, without injured center Khaled Holmes, was confused and overpowered by the Cardinal.
