The resignation of United Airlines chief James Goodwin on Sunday capped a short and tumultuous tenure as head of the nation's second-largest airline. Goodwin's departure came less than three years after his selection as chairman and chief executive of what was then the biggest U.S. carrier. The 34-year United veteran was immediately replaced by John Creighton Jr., a non-airline executive who serves on the company's board.

And he was to be the Angels' catcher--superstar catcher--of the future. Eleven years and two major league teams later, Goodwin was playing in Japan for the Nankai Hawks. It was Goodwin's last stop before ending a career that never took off the way many figured it would. But this is no sad story of lost dreams and unfulfilled promise.

A University of Washington football player and three former Husky athletes were among eight people charged with selling cocaine or marijuana Tuesday in Seattle, adding another element of controversy for the Pacific 10 Conference's Rose Bowl representative. Danianke Smith, a reserve linebacker from Long Beach, was charged with five counts of selling cocaine or marijuana, according to a criminal complaint filed in King County Superior Court.

A psychologist known as the "Pied Piper of Prozac" has reached a settlement with a Washington state board, ending nearly three years of litigation over his methods of diagnosing and treating patients. James Goodwin may continue his practice but must consult with an advisor for as long as three years. But, according to the agreement, the state board also says it recognizes Goodwin's preferred method of therapy as effective in treating some forms of depression.

UAL Corp. Chief Executive James Goodwin said in a letter to employees that its United Airlines unit may "perish" next year if it can't stem losses that widened after Sept. 11. The carrier wasn't in a "comfortable situation" before the terrorist attacks, Air Transport World Magazine quoted Goodwin as saying in a report posted on its Web site. Operating costs exceed sales at four times the rate before the terrorist attacks, the report said.
