Kidnaping and murder charges were filed Tuesday in Orange County Municipal Court against transients James Gregory Marlow, 30, and Cynthia Lynn Coffman, 24, in the strangulation killing of 19-year-old college student Lynel Murray of Huntington Beach. Deputy Dist. Atty. Rick Toohey said he will seek the death penalty because the Nov. 12 slaying occurred in the course of burglary, robbery, rape and kidnaping.

Coroners have determined the cause of death of Corinna D. Novis, 20, a Redlands woman whose body was found buried last month in a shallow grave in Fontana. Jim Alexander, San Bernardino County chief deputy coroner, said the results of tissue biopsies established the cause of death as strangulation and suffocation. Police have charged Cynthia Lynn Coffman and James Gregory Marlow, two transients, with the kidnaping and murder of Novis. She was abducted Nov.

James Gregory Marlow, already facing the gas chamber for the murder of a Redlands woman, was handed a second death sentence Monday for kidnaping, raping and killing a Huntington Beach woman. The jury, which began deliberations Friday afternoon, returned the verdict Monday after a total of four hours. "We are gratified the jury agreed with us that his conduct in kidnaping, robbing and raping this girl . . . warranted the death penalty," Deputy Dist. Atty. Robert C. Gannon Jr. said.

An Orange County Superior Court judge on Friday reluctantly accepted the jury's recommendation that James Gregory Marlow be sentenced to death for the rape and murder of a Huntington Beach woman. Judge Donald McCartin said he thought Marlow had changed since he tortured and strangled the 19-year-old woman, but the circumstances of the "hideous" crime gave him "no choice" but to impose the death sentence. "This has been an extremely difficult case for me," McCartin said.

A man who already faces the death penalty for the sex murder of one woman pleaded guilty Tuesday to raping and killing a Huntington Beach woman he and his girlfriend abducted at gunpoint from a dry-cleaning shop. James Gregory Marlow's guilty plea, which came in the middle of his trial, is an attempt to avoid the gas chamber, his attorneys said. Despite his plea, Marlow, 35, still faces either life without the possibility of parole or the death penalty for the Nov.
