James A. Hayes, former state assemblyman and member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors known for his work on juvenile justice reform, environmental protection and energy conservation, has died. He was 78. Hayes, who stepped down from the board somewhat mysteriously and virtually bowed out of politics more than two decades ago, died Thursday in a Lomita nursing home. He had suffered from various health problems. A lawyer born in Fowler, Calif.

Virginia investor James Hayes accused Gillette and its directors of breaching their fiduciary duties to shareholders by buying back Revlon's Gillette holdings for $59.50 per share rather than accept Revlon's $65-per-share takeover offer. The suit seeks to rescind the stock purchase. Gillette had no comment on the suit.

Young cancer patients from the Children's Hospital of Orange County will paint a 6-foot-wide "Thank You" card on Tuesday to everybody who will participate in this year's 5K CHOC Walk fund-raiser. The CHOC Walk will be held on Oct. 15. Led by professional artist James Hayes, the children will decorate the card at 10 a.m. at Mimi's Cafe, 17231 East 17th St., in Tustin.

A mother's report that her 5-year-old son was asleep in the back of a car when it was stolen was a hoax, and her boyfriend was charged in Gadsden with killing the boy, authorities said. The body of Geontae Glass and the car that was reported stolen were found in a garage at a house in rural Etowah County, Sheriff James Hayes said.
