It seems that everyone wants a piece of James Kudelka these days--or, more precisely, everyone in the dance world wants a piece by James Kudelka, the Canadian choreographer whose works veer from the ineffably beautiful to the disturbingly dark, while always retaining the rigor and elan of classical ballet. Critics have called him "the most imaginative choreographic voice to come out of ballet in the last decade" and "the next great voice of ballet vocabulary."

American Ballet Theatre will dance the first West Coast performances of James Kudelka's "Cruel World" (set to Tchaikovsky's "Souvenir de Florence") on Sept. 21 and 22 at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa. Also on the mixed repertory program, the same each day, will be Twyla Tharp's "In the Upper Room" (music by Philip Glass) and Natalia Makarova's staging of "The Kingdom of the Shades" from "La Bayadere."

Canada Picks Ballet Director: Canada's best-known choreographer, James Kudelka, has been appointed artistic director of the National Ballet of Canada, marking the first time that someone who rose to fame as a choreographer--and not a dancer--has been selected to head the company.

San Francisco Ballet, the oldest professional ballet troupe in the U.S., has announced that it will celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2008 with, among other projects, premieres by 10 choreographers, performances by three visiting dance companies and a four-city national tour.

Jean-Pierre Perreault, 55, an award-winning Canadian choreographer who once described his approach to creating dances as that of "a drowning man who fights for survival," died Tuesday of cancer at Notre Dame Hospital in Montreal. Perreault is best-known for his 65-minute, unaccompanied 1983 modern dance spectacle "Joe," which reached Los Angeles in 1996.

The National Ballet of Canada has announced casting for "The Merry Widow" Oct. 11 through 13 at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa. In addition, James Kudelka's new "Musings" will replace "Paquita" on the company's mixed-repertory programs, Oct. 8 and 9. "Musings," set to Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, received its premiere in June in Toronto. In "The Merry Widow," the roles of Hanna and Danilo will be danced by Karen Kain and Rex Harrington, respectively, on Oct. 10 at 8 p.m.
