James L. Johnson hadn't provided many clues that he planned to inaugurate a new era at GTE Corp. when he assumed the top post at the nation's third-largest telephone operating company last April. A plain-speaking Texas native, "Rocky" Johnson was a telephone company "lifer" who had served for two years as company president under Theodore Brophy, the polished lawyer who preceded him as chairman and chief executive. But those who expected Johnson to stay the course soon learned differently.

GTE Corp. said James L. Johnson has been elected president and chief operating officer. Johnson, who was corporate senior vice president and president of GTE's telephone operating group, fills posts previously held by Thomas Vanderslice, who resigned in December, 1983.

Science Series for PBS: GTE Corp. said Monday that it has agreed to provide $11 million over five years to underwrite a new series for PBS, "Scientific American Frontiers." The magazine-format series will air five times a year, beginning in October, 1990.

President Charles R. Lee has been named chairman and chief executive of GTE Corp., the Stamford, Conn.-based telecommunications company announced Thursday. Lee, who has been president and chief operating officer since December, 1988, will replace James L. Johnson, who will retire May 1. Johnson will remain on the GTE board as chairman emeritus. Lee, 51, joined GTE from Columbia Pictures Industries Inc., where he was senior vice president of finance from 1980 to 1983.

Imagyn Medical Technologies Inc. said it has appointed Michael Montevideo, former treasurer at FHP International Corp., as chief financial officer. Montevideo, 43, left FHP after PacifiCare Health Systems Inc. bought it for $2.2 billion in February. Imagyn, a maker of urological, gynecological and general surgery products, was formed from the merger last month of Orange County companies Imagyn Medical Inc. and Urohealth Systems Inc. Anne F. Johnson, one of the first teachers at E. J. Toll Junior High School in Glendale, has died at a Glendale hospital. She was 100. A longtime Glendale resident, Miss Johnson died Thursday of complications of old age, said Sylvia Arevalo, a longtime friend. Born in Wandsworth, England, Miss Johnson came to the United States as an infant and was raised in New Jersey. In 1921, she moved to California, where she earned a bachelor's degree in math and a master's degree in education at USC.

Urohealth Systems Inc., which has been on an acquisition spree, is beefing up its management team. Officials of the Costa Mesa maker of urological products said Wednesday that Julian Osbon, the chairman and chief executive of Osbon Medical Systems, will become Urohealth's president and chief operating officer and a director when Urohealth's recently announced purchase of Atlanta-based Osbon is completed.
