Forward Adam Stetson shook his head, mustered up his best Texas drawl, and still couldn't find the reason for UC Irvine's woes Sunday. They results were plain enough. The Anteaters were buried, 71-57, by James Madison in front of 1,006 in the Bren Center. They were out-rebounded, out-shot and out-hustled. But why it happened left the Irvine players a bit puzzled. "I plead the fifth," Stetson said. "I don't know what happened. I wish I did. We knew James Madison was a get-it-and-go team.

Forward Adam Stetson shook his head, mustered his best Texas drawl and, even with all that effort, still couldn't pinpoint the reason for UC Irvine's woes Sunday. The results were plain enough. "Crash Course in Americanism" (editorial, Dec. 29) listed six documents that formed this nation's union and will now be required reading in all public schools by state law. It is difficult to understand how one of the most important "freedom papers" in this nation's history has been omitted from this reading list. James Madison's "A Memorial and Remonstrance" (1784) protested a bill introduced by Patrick Henry, "Establishing a Provision for Teachers of Religion," in the commonwealth of Virginia.

It is astonishing that Jack Rakove, a professor at Stanford University, can write a column about how the Constitution should not be carelessly amended without noting that the Constitution has already been informally amended out of existence . . . amended out of existence, that is, if the purpose of the Constitution is to protect individuals' rights (as confirmed by the 9th an 14th amendments) and to assign limited, enumerated powers to the federal government (as confirmed by the 10th Amendment)

Thomas Jefferson and James Madison met in October, 1776, in Williamsburg, Va. Thirty-three-year-old Jefferson was already an acknowledged American phenomenon, author of the Declaration of Independence; in Madison's words, "a walking library" and a man with whom "the Genius of Philosophy ever walked hand in hand." Madison, eight years younger, was an equal if lower-key prodigy. His principal accomplishment to date had been the shaping of the guarantee of religious liberty in the Virginia Declaration of Rights, and he would be a principal architect of the Constitution and especially the Bill of Rights.

As a little old political Independent just trying to get good government, I am writing to ask the good people of Orange County to tell their Republican leadership to pick up their recall marbles and go back to work. Did Willie Brown outfox the Republicans again? Seems he did! Do they have some cause to be upset? Upset is not unreasonable! Are they handling it like the mature people we expect them to be? No, they're not! Instead of good government, we're getting the Hatfields trying to stir up the McCoys.

When everything is going well for the top-ranked Cal State Fullerton baseball team, it looks so easy. That was the case Friday in a 9-1 victory that eliminated James Madison from the NCAA South Regional. Fullerton (51-9) advanced to today's 9 a.m. (PDT) game against Rice, the regional's only other unbeaten team. Rice defeated LSU, 15-7. The winner will advance to the championship round Sunday.
