The event: Matt Damon and producer Jerry Weintraub teamed up Tuesday to emcee the 2014 UNICEF Ball, so often going off script in their lively, largely impromptu dialogue that at one point Damon turned to Weintraub and, referencing Sunday's Golden Globes telecast, asked if the two were the night's Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. The honors: Presented by Baccarat, the black-tie affair at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills honored Michael Douglas, a United Nations Messenger of Peace, and Ghada Irani, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF's Southern California board chair, with Danny Kaye Humanitarian Awards for their support of UNICEF's mission to save and improve children's lives.

Moviegoers well-acquainted with Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels' eyebrow-raising filmic oeuvre may be shocked to learn that his latest movie, “The Butler,” seems, at first blush, rather short on salacious surprises. This from the guy who had Nicole Kidman urinate on Zac Effron's face in last year's lurid drama “The Paperboy” and had Mo'Nique hurl a frying pan at Gabourey Sidibe's head (en route to claiming an Academy Award) in 2009's “Precious.” "The Butler" centers on Cecil Bates (Forrest Whitaker)

The singing, dancing, acting Oklahoma native's resume is a study in sound judgment: "Superman Returns," "X-Men," "The Notebook," "Ally McBeal," "Saved by the Bell: The New Class." (You think we're kidding.) Marsden, 33, chatted with The Times about his new film, "Hairspray," mistaken identity and Internet myths. I was a huge fan of your work on "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer." Claire Danes may be focusing more on the home front than on "Homeland" right about now - she's just welcomed a baby boy with husband Hugh Dancy. Cyrus Michael Christopher Dancy arrived Monday, the actress' rep told People, giving up no other details about the newborn. Nice timing, Cyrus: The wee one arrived the day after "Homeland's" second-season finale . No headline-stealing in this family! Not to mention he's freed up Mom to wear some smashing fashions as she cruises through awards season once again.

It's taken the equivalent of a fairy tale quest for Barry Josephson, producer of Disney's "Enchanted," to arrive at a happy ending for his live-action/animated musical, which opens Nov. 21.
