Father James McKeon kept financial records for his Simi Valley parish in a "little black book" full of question marks, scribbles, Latin notations and some numbers that even he could not explain while testifying Thursday in the embezzlement trial of his former assistant. Under intense cross-examination by the defense attorney for Father David Dean Piroli, McKeon admitted he could not tell receipts apart from payments in the worn, red-trimmed Leatherette ledger he kept at St. Peter Claver Church.

Before a single witness has testified, the collection plate embezzlement trial of Father David Dean Piroli has shaken the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Cardinal Roger M. Mahony is among the potential witnesses. Some parishioners have been dismayed not just by the charges against Piroli but also by his lawyer's accusations that the real culprit is another priest who wanted to hide his own embezzlement of $60,000 and homosexuality.

Dennis Mongrain swings his surfboard around in the water, points himself toward shore and starts paddling. As the wave lifts his board, he jumps to his feet and begins to skirt across its smooth, arching surface. His face brightens with a broad smile. As the church embezzlement trial of Father David Dean Piroli resumed Monday, the defense gave evidence seeking to exonerate the priest in the alleged theft of $60,000 in collection money and to implicate Father James McKeon, his former boss. The defense's expert witness, Michael G. Kaplan, a USC accounting professor, testified that he found no evidence that money was missing from either of Piroli's former parishes--Sacred Heart Church in Saticoy or St. Peter Claver Church in Simi Valley.

As jury selection Tuesday opened the trial of a Simi Valley priest accused of embezzling $60,000 in collection money from two Ventura County churches, his attorney won permission to fight the already sensational charges with a new allegation: Another priest did it. The attorney for Father David Dean Piroli told Superior Court Judge Allan Steele that the money was actually embezzled from St. Peter Claver Church by its head pastor at the time.
