At first glance, it's a curious career move for Dennis M. Smith, now superintendent in urban Orlando, Fla. Smith, 48, left the high-achieving Irvine schools three years ago, seeking a bigger school district where students face more educational challenges.

The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District will continue taking applications for superintendent until April 14. School district officials expect to start their screening process and interviews shortly thereafter. Their goal is to hire, by July 1, a replacement for James O. Fleming, who retires June 30. The school district has hired Leadership Associates to conduct a candidate search.

James O. Fleming has been named interim superintendent for the Tustin Unified School District effective today. Fleming, who retired from his position as superintendent of the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District in June, replaces George Mannon until a permanent superintendent is selected. Mannon has taken a job as the superintendent of the Glendora Unified School District.

Placentia Unified School District Supt. James O. Fleming and members of his staff will hold quarterly review meetings to keep parents and residents updated on school activities. The first meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Esperanza High School. Meetings will also be held March 7 at El Dorado High School and May 16 at Valencia High School.
