About 100 people honored Olympic gold medalist Janet Evans and State Sen. John R. Lewis (R-Orange) as the first inductees into the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District Hall of Fame on Friday night. The Hall of Fame, created by Supt. James O. Fleming, is to recognize the achievements of district alumni and to provide role models for the district's 22,000 students. "There has been a lot of bashing of public education," Fleming said.

Relying on the county's pledge to repay school districts 90% of the funds they had invested in the county pool by early June, school officials announced they will not issue any layoff notices to teachers. "We have ample funds in various (accounts) to absorb the shortfall while waiting for the county to repay us," said Kim Stallings, assistant superintendent for business for Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District.

Former school board trustee Quentin Goodman has praised recent legislation that will allow all Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District students to attend district high schools as "one of the greatest things that has happened to our district." But even as Goodman and others who worked to get the legislation passed celebrated the signing of the bill by Gov. Pete Wilson earlier this month, the district is grappling with the question of what to do with the students who will be affected.

The recent letter (Sept. 4) by Carolyn Clark regarding annexation of the Yorba Linda School District to the Placentia Unified School District sounds more like a reproach of the Placentia district than valid arguments against a merger of the districts. The Citizens Against School Annexation group ignores the educational advantages to students from a merger and focuses on economics and facilities. Clark attacks the finances of the Placentia district without even supporting her contention that Yorba Linda students would be better off economically without annexation.

A resolution decrying violence on television sparked a rare dispute Tuesday among members of the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District Board of Education. While four of his colleagues applauded Resolution 120, which in part calls for the Federal Communications Commission to ban "gratuitous, dramatized violence" on television from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., Trustee William Kielty attacked it as "tap-dancing around censorship."

The City Council this week approved a resolution that criticizes what Mayor John M. Gullixson says is the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District's refusal to build more schools in Yorba Linda. Councilman Henry W. Wedaa cast the lone dissenting vote Tuesday night, questioning whether it was appropriate for the council to pass a resolution regarding school district policies.

More than 70 parents of Brookhaven and Wagner elementary school students turned out at this week's school board meeting to protest an advisory panel's recommendation to close one of the schools. Despite assurances from Supt. James O. Fleming that he does not support closing any school, parents have continued to condemn recommendations by the committee on school attendance boundaries that Brookhaven or Wagner be closed and its students be divided among several other elementary schools.

Mayor John M. Gullixson fired the latest round in his battle to compel the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District to build more schools in the city. Earlier this week he released a proposed resolution that criticizes several policies he says the district follows. It also says that the city, by virtue of having the most students in the district, wields significant financial and political clout with the district.
