Miller, who shepherded Pacific Enterprises through an aggressive diversification beyond its core Southern California Gas Co. utility, said Tuesday that he will retire as chairman and chief executive at the end of this month, ending a 41-year career and 103 years of family leadership. Miller, 64, whose grandfather co-founded the $7-billion company, will hand the reins Nov. 1 to President James R.

Pacific Enterprises' Profit Skids: Pacific Enterprises, parent of Southern California Gas Co. and the slumping Thrifty Corp. drug and sporting goods chains, reported that its third-quarter earnings fell 54% to $26 million. The earnings, which amounted to 31 cents a share, came on revenue that declined 4% to $1.57 billion. James R. Ukropina, chairman and chief executive of Los Angeles-based Pacific, said SoCal Gas' improved performance was wiped out by losses at its Thrifty Corp.

Fourth-quarter earnings rose 38% at Pacific Enterprises, the parent of Southern California Gas Co. and Thrifty Corp. stores, the company said Thursday. "Results benefited from the continued strong performance of our utility . . . and from higher oil prices and production realized by our oil and gas subsidiary," Chairman James R. Ukropina said in a statement. For the quarter ending Dec. 31, Pacific Enterprises earned $58 million, compared to $42 million during the same period in 1989.
