The nation's largest black-owned companies are restructuring to face competition and an uncertain economy, according to a new survey released Monday by Black Enterprise magazine. The magazine's latest annual survey of the top 100 black industrial and service companies shows that, like many U.S. companies in general, leading black businesses are exploring new approaches in order to be competitive.

Only Mount St. Mary's and Family Service (Los Angeles and other branches) have taken the entire Shubert Theater (1,717 seats) for benefits at performances of "Les Miserables." David and Norma McIntyre, tireless workers, report that Mount St. Mary's has 1,200 tickets sold, and is closing in on a sellout for May 26. The Mount is the only one to have a black-tie dinner (for $600 patrons at the Bistro Garden) as well as an elaborate buffet at the Century Plaza Tower.

A large crystal trophy on Lonear Heard-Davis' desk reflects the huge success the Buena Park resident has had with her McDonald's restaurants over the past 23 years. But Heard-Davis, who spent much of her youth toiling in the cotton fields of Mississippi, says building the franchise is not enough. The high point in her career will come when she transfers control of James T. Heard Management Corp.
