Shark Week 2012 is here, a razor-toothed antidote for the nation's TV viewers who are disappointed that it will be two more years before they can watch U.S. athletes going for the gold again. What's Shark Week, you ask? Where have you been? That's when the Discovery Channel turns over a week's worth of prime-time programming to those monsters of the deep, and it ranks as cable's longest-running programming event. This year's Shark Week takes on an added dimension as the toothy predators have been dominating the news of late -- whether it's a shark chomping on a teenager's paddleboard in Catalina; stalking a kayaker ; biting a man (in two instances off Cape Cod, Mass.)

On Wednesday, Barack Obama, the president of the United States, will appear on "Mythbusters," the long-running Discovery Channel series that tests the truth of common wisdom, received notions, popular legends and stuff you see in the movies. On a more basic level, it is a show about building and blowing things up, and that, as the president himself will say here, "is always cool. " Obama has been criticized at times for the seeming alacrity with which he will go on television, any old television, but his trip to a comical basic-cable series is not without presidential precedent.

Or, more to the point: Why the monotony in these categories, Emmy voters? When nominees are hanging out at the bar as their categories are being presented, you're doing something wrong.
