Jan Baum is closing her La Brea Avenue gallery on the last day of 2007. Thirty years after staging the first of hundreds of exhibitions for artists such as Betye Saar, Peter Plagens, Chris Burden and Roberto Gil de Montes, it's time for Baum, who's now in her 70s, to travel and pursue her art passions at a more leisurely pace.

La Brea Ave. The evening's events include a preview reception and a guided walk-through with Lynn Zelevansky, associate curator of contemporary art at L.A. County Museum of Art. The LACE annual benefit auction will be held Nov. 2 at Jan Baum Gallery, 170 S. La Brea Ave. The organization's primary fund-raising event will feature cocktails, supper, a live auction and raffle drawing. The auction will include works donated by John Baldessari, Uta Barth, Sam Durant, Karen Carson, Gronk and William Wegman, among others. Tickets are $60 for LACE members; $75 for the general public. Dextra Frankel, director of the Cal State Fullerton art gallery for 24 years, has resigned to work full time on her design business in Los Angeles. Daniel Sterns, 37, has been named acting director. Sterns, a graduate of Cal State Fullerton, with bachelor's and master's degrees in arts and design, began his new job earlier this month.

Landscape Diagrams: Like his earlier paintings loosely keyed around notions of vessels and tables, Martin Facey's "Maps" at Jan Baum Gallery probe, as he puts it, the relationship between order and chaos. Facey, who moved from L.A. to New Mexico in 1986, infuses these recent paintings with the chromatic splendor of the Southwestern landscape but also, unfortunately, with the attractive, formulaic blandness associated with art of the region.

Jan Baum Gallery kicks off the fall season with an exhibition of three young artists, all of whom take a relatively formal approach to art-making. Rochelle Caper describes her work as being about "fantasy that has to do with primitive instincts" but her vibrant abstractions are in fact much more controlled than that comment implies.
