There is something kind of groovy about "Peace, Love & Misunderstanding. " The mellow yellow comedy stars Jane Fonda as a 70-something hippie with a passion for pot and protest suddenly dealing with the prodigal daughter who is back in the picture after revolting against that lifestyle years ago. It's not "On Golden Pond" by any stretch, but it is nice to have Fonda back in the fractious family way. Written by first-timers Christina Mengert and...

Former state Sen. Ruben S. Ayala, a scrappy Democrat from Chino who fought for a controversial water project and helped create the California Conservation Corps during a legislative career that ran for 24 years until term limits forced him out, died of natural causes Wednesday in Ontario. He was 89. His death was confirmed by his son Maurice. After two decades in local government, Ayala was elected to the Senate in 1974, representing a district that encompassed the western San Bernardino County cities of Ontario, Fontana, Rialto, Colton and Chino in addition to Pomona in Los Angeles County.

Celebrities love giving advice, whether it's hunky Mario Lopez telling us how to work out or zany Jenny McCarthy counseling us on autism. Judging from some of their book and video sales, apparently we like to listen. Jane Fonda is no exception. Although her early fame came through acting (and later infamy via her Vietnam War activism), in the 1980s she positioned herself as a fitness guru with a series of exercise videos and some exercise studios bearing her name. That gave her some cred in the fitness world, and for good reason - her impeccably toned body was a walking billboard for clean living.

MUSIC Adele "I'll Be Waiting" is a neo-soul sashay, and it inspires the singer to push her vocal expressions into sweet howls reminiscent of those by Dusty Springfield, another Brit deeply influenced by American country and soul. Overall, her album "21" shows that Adele, now 23, is towering in the same landscape where some of her contemporaries, beehived or not, have lost all their bearings. Greek Theatre, 2700 N. Vermont Ave., L.A. 7:30 p.m. $32.50-$65. Greektheatrela.com.

"Finding Neverland," a planned stage musical based on the popular 2004 movie, has been grounded. The La Jolla Playhouse said it was removing the musical from its 2011-12 schedule and replacing it with a revival of "Jesus Christ Superstar" imported from the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Canada. The La Jolla Playhouse said "Finding Neverland" was canceled because the Weinstein Co. withdrew from the project. Harvey and Bob Weinstein served as executive producers on the 2004 movie, which was produced by Miramax.

Before she could present Jane Fonda with the UCLA Longevity Center's Icon Award, Jennifer Lopez had to pause midway in her recitation of Fonda's lofty achievements — actress, fitness guru, author and activist for environmental, human rights, health, women's empowerment issues and more.
