Not yet 30, jazz vocalist Jane Monheit has released five albums, most recently "Taking a Chance on Love." There's a really interesting little place in Big Sur. I've only been there once, when I played the Monterey Jazz Festival in 2001, but it left a big impression. It's a little restaurant and B & B called Deetjen's. It's a family-run, out-of-the-way place that's been there for a million years.

On such a winter's day in New York, Jane Monheit was California dreaming. Specifically, her thoughts were turned toward the Catalina Jazz Club , where the 33-year-old chanteuse had been scheduled to play her regular New Year's Eve gig, starting Tuesday night and culminating Sunday. Instead, Monheit, her husband and their 21/2 -year-old son have been virtually housebound since Christmas Eve at her parents' Long Island home ? stranded, like seemingly half the Eastern seaboard, by the Pleistocene -worthy winter storms that have blanketed the region.

JANE MONHEIT can do just about anything she chooses, musically. Blessed with an extraordinarily warm and supple voice, perfect pitch, inventive musicality and an insightful approach to storytelling, she has the capacity to express herself convincingly in virtually any area of the music world. What she's chosen -- this far, at least -- is jazz. And her performance Tuesday at Catalina Bar & Grill offered plenty of reasons why fans of the genre can be pleased that she's done so.

Jane Monheit in action is an attention-grabbing blend of sight and sound. Her lush, textured voice--astonishingly mature for an artist who won't turn 24 until November--embraces familiar ballads with engaging sensitivity. And the elegance of her poised, onstage manner is countered by an undercurrent of sensuality triggered by a thick mane of long, curly black hair.

Jane Monheit: The singer's two-week stint at Feinstein's, which features a salute to the great MGM musicals, enters its final weekend. Monheit first achieved national prominence when she was named first runner-up at the 1998 Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition. The panel of judges (Dee Dee Bridgewater, Nneena Freelon, Diana Krall, Dianne Reeves and the late Joe Williams) realized that despite her youth (20 at the time) Monheit was something special.

There was a striking difference between the Jane Monheit who showed up on stage at Pepperdine's Smothers Theatre on Friday night and the Jane Monheit who is represented on her new CD, "In the Sun." Anyone hearing her in concert for the first time would have had little difficulty identifying her as a jazz singer -- and a good one, at that. In contrast, anyone experiencing Monheit for the first time on the CD could easily be reluctant to use the label at all.

The "new star" label can be a tough challenge for a young artist. Expectations are high, criticism lurks in the bushes, and the demand for maturity from a still-forming creative persona is ever present. Jane Monheit, however, cruised through these rocky shoals with consummate ease in her opening set Thursday at Catalina Bar & Grill.

Ask a jazz musician what they did on New Year's Eve and the most likely response will be a quizzical look followed by "I worked; what else?" That's because the ringing in of the new is the one night in which, to paraphrase Garrison Keillor, the gigs abound, the joints are crowded and the prices are above average. The arrival of 2002 was no exception, with rhythms swinging across the Southland, from Fullerton's Steamers to Valley Glen's Charlie O's.
