Marvelous Crown of Japan outran co-favorite Paradise Creek of the United States down the stretch Sunday to win the Japan Cup, the world's richest horse race, by a nose. The victory in front of a crowd of 165,930 at Tokyo Race Course was worth $1.74 million from a purse of $4.03 million, increasing Marvelous Crown's career earnings to $4.16 million. It was the 1,301st career victory for jockey Katsumi Minai, who earlier this year became Japan's first Triple Crown winner in 10 years.
