In the largest potential deal so far between foreign energy companies and the Russian energy industry, a U.S.-Japanese consortium has won the international competition to explore two big oil and gas fields on Sakhalin Island, off the Siberian coast. After months of rumors and speculation, the MMM Group--comprised of Marathon Oil Co. and McDermott International Inc., both U.S. firms, and Mitsui & Co.

A small Tokyo diamond outfit is dipping into the gem trade in eastern Russia in a move traders say could chip away at the dominance in Japan of market giant De Beers. Arda Co., an independent jewelry firm, agreed in May to set up diamond-polishing plants in Sakha. The region, which accounts for virtually all of Russia's output, is one of the world's biggest diamond producers. Arda plans to market the finished diamonds in Japan, which has become the largest single market in the world.

When his classmates at elite Waseda University signed up dutifully for staid careers in Japan's corporate world, maverick Kimio Nakagawa defied his country's tacit freeze on relations with the Soviet Union and went to Siberia to seek his fortune. The Russian literature major landed a job with Radio Moscow in Khabarovsk, the industrial center in the Russian Far East, then started a translating business, which grew into a fledgling importer of Russian fish.
