Only weeks after a pinched nerve in his lower back threatened to ruin his senior season before it began, Calabasas left-hander Jared Sandler picked up the victory as the Coyotes trounced Moorpark, 12-2, Friday in the Frontier League opener for both teams. Sandler (1-0), who attended Montclair Prep for three years and was 12-2 for the Mounties last season, transferred to Calabasas this year because his parents moved.

"He just asked me to compete and take us as deep [in the game] as I could." The San Jose State left-hander, a former Calabasas High and Glendale College standout, figured nine innings would do.

The crafty left-hander tossed a three-hitter, but two of the hits were home runs by the Knights' Forrest Johnson, helping Rialto to a 4-0 victory and handing top-seeded Calabasas its only loss of the season.

The rain on Jan. 23, 1995, was hard and unrelenting. Cooped in a classroom at Calabasas High that day, about 40 candidates for the Coyotes' baseball team whiled away the sixth-period P.E. class while co-coach and English teacher Rick Nathanson did his best to keep the group under control. Few players noticed when Nathanson was called into the hall for a short discussion, but when he returned they immediately sensed something was wrong.

Jesse Slade led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a home run to send Woodland Hills to a 3-2 victory over Rancho Penasquitos on Tuesday in the consolation semifinal of the state Division 2 Little League baseball tournament at Stearns Park in Long Beach. Left-hander Jared Sandler, who struck out nine and allowed one hit, picked up the win in the game for all-star players aged 11-12 .

Jesse Slade had three doubles--among 11 for Las Virgenes East--in a 20-3 American Legion District 20 victory over Woodland Hills West on Wednesday at El Camino Real High. The game was called after five innings because of the mercy rule. Slade, who was three for three with four runs batted in, cleared the bases with a first-inning double to highlight an eight-run rally.

Pitcher Wayne Nix of Monroe High says he will not play in the 19th Bernie Milligan All-Star baseball game today at Cal State Northridge. In the wake of Friday's storm, perhaps none of the 41 players selected will play in the showcase of area seniors. A decision is expected at 11 a.m. today as to whether the field has drained sufficiently for the game to be played as scheduled at 3:30. Nix, who had an 11-2 record and a 0.

Greg Zutler and Stacy Kleiner combined on a one-hitter to lead Woodland Hills East to a 3-1 victory over Granada Hills West in an American Legion District 20 Western Division game Wednesday at Taft High. Zutler had a no-hitter for six innings before Mike Rutter singled to start the seventh. Kleiner retired the final three batters. Kleiner had a triple in the first and a home run in the fifth to give East (6-1) a 3-0 lead.

Judd Granzow of Faith Baptist High, a fourth-round draft pick who recently signed with the Dodgers, has been named Southern Section Division V co-player of the year. Granzow shares the honor with St. Monica's Carlos Casillas. Granzow's 12 home runs and 43 runs led the area. The senior outfielder batted .411 with 39 runs batted in. Eight other area players were named to the All-Southern Section Division IV, V and VI teams.
