Female country singers are complaining that their music is being pushed off the airwaves by a new crew of young, male, “bro-country” musicians singing interchangeable songs about dirt roads, pickup trucks, girls in tiny cutoff jeans and beer, lots of beer. Carrie Underwood is leading the charge, telling Billboard magazine that the country music business seems to have very limited room for new female musicians, but that it's different for the guys. “There seem to be so many male singers out there who can be viewed as similar, and there seems to be plenty of room for all of them,” Underwood said.

It's not quite being asked to perform at next year's Super Bowl , but for an R&B star who's faced no shortage of personal and professional tumult over the last few years, Brandy's ascent to the No. 2 spot on iTunes' album chart Tuesday afternoon probably feels an awful lot like validation. The singer's first solo disc since 2008's coolly received "Human," "Two Eleven" openly invites that kind of speculation. "It seemed I had it all, that's what they thought," Brandy sings in the album's heartfelt opener, " Wildest Dreams . " "But I was peeling like paint on the wall / I had to cover up the hurt," she continues.

Dan Snaith is best known under his pseudonym Caribou, where he makes deeply emotional, smartly crafted electronic music. A master programmer and instrumentalist, Snaith has continued to expand his sound since his early work as Manitoba, crafting luscious tunes that reveal a curious mind at work. A few years ago, however, Snaith started to get nostalgic for the early sounds of techno and house culture, and harnessed that energy through a project called Daphni. He'd been frustrated with the new breed of pop-friendly EDM, and wondered whether the genre's success had ruined the music.

The cowboy rides away a winner, as veteran Texas singer George Strait collected the top honor for entertainer of the year Sunday at the 49th Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas. The fan-voted award comes as Strait is in the midst of his Cowboy Rides Away farewell tour, after announcing last year his decision to quit touring. "Wow," the 61-year-old musician said as he was greeted by a standing ovation in the MGM Grand Garden Arena. "You know, I've always said I had the best fans in the world, and I heard this was a fan-voted thing, so I rest my case.
