Jason Boyce scored his eighth goal of the season as the Waves defeated the Bay Area Seals, 1-0, in A-League soccer Friday at Santa Ana Stadium. Boyce, who is tied for the league's scoring lead with 24 points (eight goals, eight assists), scored with one minute remaining in the first half off an assist from Steve Patterson. The Waves (9-8-1) moved into sole possession of second place, ahead of idle Seattle (7-5-3) and El Paso (8-6-1). San Diego (9-5-1) is in first place.

That blur was Jason Boyce, the whiz kid of Corona del Mar's soccer team. There he goes again. Whoosh. Not many can keep up with him. Those who can then have to deal with his skills. It's not an inviting prospect. Go to any Sea King soccer game and you can pick out Boyce in a second. He's the one the others are usually chasing. It can be mesmerizing watching him dance and dodge and fly. "Heck, I'd certainly pay money to watch Jason play," said Ray Hales, his coach.

Boyce chose Washington over Fresno State, UCLA and Creighton. * Mater Dei girls' soccer player Chrissy Whalen has signed a letter of intent to attend UCLA. Whalen is a forward for the Monarchs, who won the South Coast League title.

Steve Patterson scored three goals as the Zodiac defeated the Vancouver 86ers, 3-2, in A-League soccer Friday in front of 5,104 at Swangard Stadium in Vancouver, B.C. The loss ended a five-game winning streak for the 86ers. Patterson scored the winning goal in the 55th minute, knocking in a cross from Jason Boyce. Martin Vasquez assisted on Patterson's first two goals.

The Waves moved into first place in the Pacific Division by defeating the San Diego Flash, 3-0, in A-League soccer Friday night in front of 1,873 at Douglas Stadium in San Diego. Jason Boyce scored two unassisted goals and assisted on Paul Polowski's goal five minutes into the game for the Waves. Boyce scored in the 27th and 85th minutes. Wave goalkeeper Mike Littman had five saves on 10 shots. The Waves improved to 3-1. The Flash, last season's Western Conference champion, is 2-1.

Gustavo Leal took a pass from Jason Boyce and headed the ball past goalie Dimitar Popov in the 35th minute. Peer Van de Ven had 12 saves for the Waves (3-2). SOFTBALL Second-seeded Fullerton will host Grossmont at noon Saturday in the first round of the Southern California community college playoffs.

BASEBALL Los Alamitos first baseman Nick Fitzgerald, the Sunset League MVP last season, said he has signed with Cal State Fullerton. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound senior is hitting .435 with 20 runs batted in, 21 walks and only two strikeouts. He was a second team All-Southern Section selection last season. SOCCER Playing the final 35 minutes short-handed, the Orange County Waves defeated the Boston Bulldogs, 2-1, in an A-League soccer game Sunday in front of 885 at Santa Ana Stadium.

Kevin Noleen scored his second goal of the game in the 96th minute to give El Paso a 2-1 overtime victory over the Waves Saturday at El Paso, Texas. The Waves (8-8-1), who came into the game tied for first place with idle San Diego, wasted a chance to move alone atop the A-League's Pacific Division standings. Noleen opened the scoring in the 29th minute off an assist from Michael Griego before the Waves' Jose Vasquez tied it in the 39th minute on an unassisted goal, his fourth of the season.

The Waves will play at the Bay Area Seals at 7:30 tonight. The Waves (9-10-1), who lost on the road last weekend to Minnesota and Milwaukee, have dropped out of first place and into a tie for third with El Paso in the A-League's Pacific Division. Bay Area (8-8-2) is fourth in the Pacific with 36 points. Former Corona del Mar standout Jason Boyce continues to lead the Waves in scoring with 25 points (nine goals, seven assists). Boyce is tied for third in A-League scoring.
