When it comes to most valuable players for the summer of 2011, put left-hander Kiefer Kofman of Chatsworth near the top of any list. Kofman has been so impressive on the mound and at the plate this summer that he has stamped himself as one of the top baseball players in the City Section next spring. On Wednesday in a semifinal game of the Valley Invitational Baseball League playoffs, he retired 16 consecutive batters between the second and seventh innings en route to a three-hitter, leading Chatsworth to a 4-0 victory over Simi Valley Royal.

Developers of the Ahmanson Ranch project will continue to face hard-line opposition from a new 3rd District member of the Los Angeles City Council, as candidates for the post outlined strategies Tuesday to blunt the negative effect of the project on the west San Fernando Valley. All five candidates who attended a forum at the West Valley Jewish Community Center in West Hills voiced opposition to the housing development as presently proposed, but they differed on what to do.

Mayor Richard Riordan's staff poked fun this week at the ballot counting mess in Florida by sending out an invitation to a holiday party printed like one of those butterfly ballots that has Democrats crying foul in Tallahassee. The mock ballot offers a chance to vote on whether to attend the party, but the choices don't line up with any of the hole punches that run down the center.

Shortstop Jay Lopez had five hits, including a three-run home run, and drove in six runs to lead Lakewood High (23-4) to a 19-1 victory over Rio Mesa Oxnard in the championship game of the Redondo baseball tournament. Pitcher Mindy Cowles (19-1) threw a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead Riverside Poly (21-1) to a 4-1 victory over La Habra Sonora in the championship game of the Downey softball tournament. Catcher Elizabeth Peterson had a three-run homer in the third.

San Fernando High was 0-3 against Sylmar in Valley Mission League baseball play this season. Chatsworth was 0-3 against Reseda Cleveland in West Valley League play. Today, those teams will meet again, with trips to Dodger Stadium at stake. San Fernando (16-13-1), seeded No. 12, will take on top-seeded Sylmar (26-4) at Van Nuys Birmingham in one City Championship baseball semifinal. Sixth-seeded Chatsworth (25-5) will play No. 15 Cleveland (19-11) in the other semifinal at Pierce College.

Several city agencies plan to crack down on crime and blight at a shopping center long plagued by the sale of fake documents and drugs, officials said Wednesday. The Los Angeles Police Department, the city attorney's office and the city building and safety department will target Glen Square, a strip mall at Sherman Way and Variel Avenue, said Deputy City Atty. Jason Dominguez, who is with the Citywide Nuisance Abatement Program.
