Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward will be out at least four weeks after his jaw was broken in two places when he was hit by a pitch in a game against the New York Mets on Wednesday. The injury means Heyward will miss the rest of the regular season, but that he might be able to return for the playoffs. Heyward was batting against Mets left-hander Jonathan Niese in the top of the sixth inning when he was hit by a 90-mph fastball. He staggered after getting hit, and was grabbed by Mets catcher John Buck as he went to his knees.

ATLANTA  - He stared sullenly from the dugout as thousands of red-foam tomahawks were shaking above him. He quietly shook his head at the field as ominous chanting echoed around him. Later, in a cramped and still interview room, he spoke slowly about a sweaty Southern night during which the burden and blame of a frazzled defeat fell directly upon him. The Dodgers flirt with winning these days, bat their big eyelashes, tease it, get all comfy with it, and then watch it slip away. They couldn't close the deal yet again today, their bullpen faltering in a 3-1 loss in Atlanta that wasted a masterful pitching performance by Chris Capuano. Capuano turned in his finest outing of the season. He held the Braves scoreless through seven innings and left the game with a 1-0 lead after struggling B.J. Upton bounced a one-out single into left.

ATLANTA - The Dodgers were handed their 55th loss of the season Friday night. But this one seemed to sting more than most. The Dodgers' clubhouse was particularly quiet after their 4-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves in 11 innings, the main sound coming from the postgame fireworks show above at Turner Field. Brandon League, the Dodgers' reliever who took the loss, spoke softly as he described how the game got away after his club took a 3-1 lead into the eighth inning. "A loss is difficult, but it hurts a little more when you have the lead," League said.

ATLANTA - More than a quarter of the season is complete. The losses are continuing to mount. But in the wake of a come-from-ahead, 3-1 defeat to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night, Manager Don Mattingly remained adamant that the last-place Dodgers are underperforming. The alternative would have been to concede that the $230-million ballclub is incapable of winning consistently. "I'm not going to believe that," Mattingly said. "I know we're capable. " BOX SCORE: Atlanta 3, Dodgers 1 Mattingly pointed to how before losing their first two games of a three-game series at Turner Field, the Dodgers won four of five games.

Matt Kemp crashed face-first into the wall in right-center field. The baseball dropped. Tyler Pastornicky scored on Martin Prado's ninth-inning triple off closer Javy Guerra, condemning the Dodgers to their first home loss of the season, a 4-3 defeat to the Atlanta Braves. "I guess it was bound to happen," Guerra said. "I hate to be a part of it. " But more than a game was lost Tuesday night. Juan Rivera hit his first home run of the season in the first inning, only to limp off the field five innings later with what was described by the club as a strained hamstring.

This is going to be easy for UCLA, according to Nevada -- the “gambling” Nevada, not the “football-playing” Nevada. The 21st-ranked Bruins opened as a 14 1/2-point favorite against Nevada in their Aug. 31 season opener. That has swelled to 19 1/2 to 20 points, depending on the casino, according to Las Vegas Sports Consultants. (Las Vegas Sports Consultants sets the line for the majority of the Nevada casinos). So this looks like a tap-in putt for UCLA. Since 2007, the Bruins have been favored by 16 or more points eight times, including 20 or more points three times.

Sunny Hills (1-0) vs. El Modena (1-0) 7 TONIGHT EL MODENA HIGH Both teams are coming off shutout victories--Sunny Hills beat Baldwin Park Sierra Vista, 32-0, and El Modena defeated Garden Grove, 28-0. El Modena has some versatility on offense, led by Williams and Garcia. Sunny Hills' stingy defense returns eight starters, including defensive linemen Jason Heyward and Jeff Burton, from a unit that allowed fewer than nine points per game last season.
