New York Knicks point guard Jason Kidd will fight a charge that he was under the influence of alcohol when he crashed his vehicle into a telephone pole over the summer. "He is taking this very, very seriously," attorney Edward Burke Jr. said after Kidd appeared in court at a preliminary hearing on Wednesday. "He wants to get this past him as quickly as possible. The legal process takes some time but he is ready for his season. " Kidd was arrested about a week after signing with the Knicks when his vehicle hit a pole in Water Mill, N.Y. The misdemeanor charge carries the potential for up to a year in jail.

Steve Nash will play Tuesday against Houston even though his back might flare up any moment and the Lakers have been eliminated from playoff contention for almost four weeks. He thinks he knows why. Nash is only five assists shy of taking over third place on the NBA's all-time list. Lakers Coach Mike D'Antoni is aware of it too. "I think Mike really wants me to get this assist thing out of the way, which now I'd really like to get out the way too, frankly, because it's kind of out there in the air and everyone's kind of talking about it in L.A.," Nash said Tuesday.

Jason Kidd is going from running plays to drawing them up. The Brooklyn Nets hired the veteran point guard who spent last season with the New York Knicks before announcing his retirement with two years remaining on his contract. The Nets are hoping the presence of a former franchise cornerstone can galvanize a team that lost in the first round of the playoffs. The Nets chose Kidd over Indiana assistant Brian Shaw, who was one of the front-runners and had interviewed for the job Wednesday.

With 32 minutes logged in a loss on Monday night to the Atlanta Hawks, Kobe Bryant climbed to fifth on the NBA's list of players with the most career minutes played, regular and postseason combined. At 54,176 minutes, Bryant is behind just Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (66,297), Karl Malone (62,759), Jason Kidd (56,199) and Wilt Chamberlain (55,418). Of the top five in minutes played, all but Kidd played for the Lakers for at least one season. Bryant missed 19 games to start the season while recovering from surgery in April on his Achilles' tendon.  If he continued to average 29 minutes a night without missing any of the Lakers' 58 remaining games, Bryant would finish the regular season at 55,858 minutes played, surpassing Chamberlain.

In a move that some Lakers fans probably hope prompts their aging point guard to re-examine his own future, Jason Kidd announced his retirement Monday after a likely Hall of Fame career that spanned 19 seasons. Kidd, who turned 40 in March, ranks second all-time with 12,091 assists, trailing only John Stockton (15,806). He had two more years remaining on the three-year, $9.3-million contract he signed with the New York Knicks last summer. "My time in professional basketball has been an incredible journey, but one that must come to an end after 19 years," Kidd said in a statement released by the Knicks.

Jason Kidd landed the Brooklyn Nets' head-coaching gig Tuesday, just 10 days after retiring as a player. The former point guard was considered one of the smartest players during his 19 NBA seasons, and he led the Nets to back-to-back NBA Finals appearances in his six-plus years with the team. Still, is it possible for any first-time NBA coach to have success without first working his way up as an assistant? Writers from around Tribune Co. will try to answer that question.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Initially, the Lakers weren't crying over spilled soda. In fact, Coach Mike D'Antoni didn't even know New Jersey's Jason Kidd intentionally dumped a drink on the court late in Wednesday's game to try to get a quick word with his players despite being out of timeouts. But D'Antoni didn't like the move after he realized what Kidd did. Kidd was fined $50,000 by the NBA for his actions. "You can't do that. That's crazy," D'Antoni said Friday.

DALLAS — Dirk Nowitzki was ejected. A 16-point lead had dissolved into a four-point deficit. And that recent 13-game winning streak was looking like something that happened a long, long time ago. But the Dallas Mavericks still had a couple of things going for them. It was Jason Kidd's birthday, and they were playing the Clippers. Kidd scored a season-high 26 points, most of it coming during a game-breaking spurt at the start of the fourth quarter that sent the Mavericks to a 106-96 victory over the Clippers on Tuesday night.

Explosive new details continue to emerge in the ongoing saga between Brooklyn Nets Coach Jason Kidd and demoted assistant Lawrence Frank, who is now generating the most expensive daily reports in the history of the NBA. According to NBA.com, Kidd berated Frank during a coaches meeting earlier in the season. Here's a PG-rated version, with all the expletives left to the imagination: "Sit the ... down!" Kidd told Frank, according to NBA.com. "I'm the coach of this ... team! When you're on the bench, don't ... move!"

Mike Tomlin had one foot on the field, but did the Pittsburgh coach cross the line? The Jacoby Jones kickoff return was the most talked-about play after the Thanksgiving game between the Steelers and Baltimore, the moment Mr. Tomlin became Mr. Magoo. As the blistering-fast Jones was flying up the visitors' sideline, probably on his way to a touchdown, Tomlin was staring up at the video board and, with his back to the play, wandered to the edge of the field. Jones came perilously close to running him over, and would have had Tomlin not hopped out of the way at the last instant.

Brooklyn Nets Coach Jason Kidd has been fined $50,000 by the NBA for spilling a drink on the court in an attempt to delay the game. The Lakers held a 95-94 advantage over the Brooklyn Nets, who had no timeouts left, on Wednesday when Jodie Meeks was intentionally fouled with 8.3 seconds left in the game. After Meeks gave the Lakers a two-point lead, Tyshawn Taylor bumped into Kidd , who spilled a soda onto the court. Kidd was able to quickly diagram a play for his team as the spill was cleaned up. In a close look at the replay, Kidd can be seen saying "hit me" to Taylor.

Jason Kidd will have to wait a little beyond the start of the regular season to experience his first real games as an NBA head coach. The Brooklyn Nets have suspended their former player and new coach for the first two games of the season after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor drunk-driving charge in July, the league announced Friday. According to Nets General Manager Billy King, the suspension “is consistent with what the league has done in the past and we look forward to Jason leading our team versus Orlando and the rest of the year.” Kidd played for the then-New Jersey Nets for six-plus of his 19 NBA seasons, leading them to the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003.

Dave Joerger's road through professional basketball's minor leagues has finally landed him in an NBA head coaching seat. His first job is at a familiar spot, with a team he has been a part of for six seasons. Joerger was introduced as coach of the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday after a season in which they won a franchise-best 56 games but split with coach Lionel Hollins . "I am ready for this opportunity," Joerger said. "I have won in the past. I know how to win. We're going to win. " Joerger, 39, was a successful head coach in the minor leagues and was the lead assistant under Hollins the last two seasons.
