Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block said he will go to court to try to block the reinstatement of five deputies who were dismissed two years ago for their involvement in the fatal shooting and beating of a suspected kidnaper. In a letter to the Board of Supervisors released this week, Block said he intends to petition the Superior Court to review decisions made by the county Civil Service Commission.

Dist. Atty. Ira Reiner announced Thursday that the Los Angeles County Grand Jury will investigate the deaths of four people shot in recent weeks by sheriff's deputies. Reiner stopped short of saying whether he would ask for indictments against any of the deputies involved. But his decision to call on the grand jury was praised by law enforcement critics, who have charged that Reiner might be biased in favor of the Sheriff's Department.

A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy who fatally shot a 19-year-old Latino man last weekend at the Ramona Gardens housing project had been transferred from a sheriff's station last year amid allegations that he was linked to a white supremacist clique of deputies, according to court records. Deputy Jason Mann, a six-year veteran, shot and killed Arturo Jimenez early Saturday morning, touching off a disturbance at the East Los Angeles housing project.

Aug. 3, 1991: Sheriff's Deputy Jason Mann fatally shot 19-year-old gang member Arturo "Smokey" Jimenez at the Ramona Gardens housing project in East Los Angeles. The shooting touched off a melee in which about 300 residents threw rocks and bottles, The Times reported. According to the official account, Mann and Deputy Dana Ellison were chasing a speeding car when someone threw a bottle at their vehicle.

Four sheriff's deputies who contend that they were wrongly linked to a group of alleged gang-like deputies sued the department Thursday for transferring them from the Lynwood station without their consent. Deputies Jason Mann, Clifford Yates, Michael Duran, Michael Schneider and the Assn. for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs filed the lawsuit against Los Angeles County, the Sheriff's Department, Sheriff Sherman Block and Capt. Bert Cueva, commander of the Lynwood station.
