Dist. Atty. Ira Reiner announced Thursday that the Los Angeles County Grand Jury will investigate the deaths of four people shot in recent weeks by sheriff's deputies. Reiner stopped short of saying whether he would ask for indictments against any of the deputies involved. But his decision to call on the grand jury was praised by law enforcement critics, who have charged that Reiner might be biased in favor of the Sheriff's Department.

A bicyclist stopped on a Willowbrook street corner early Friday and fired two shots at a passing sheriff's patrol car, but neither of the two deputies inside was hit, authorities said. The incident was the third shooting in a week in which sheriff's deputies appeared to be targets of gunmen. In the latest attack, one of the deputies returned fire as the bicyclist pedaled off down Success Avenue near Imperial Highway about 1 a.m., Deputy Van Mosley said. Deputies Jerold Reeves and Jason Mann were riding in their marked patrol car when a man in his 20s sitting on a bike fired two rounds from a small handgun, Mosley said.
