Through six innings Wednesday night, Yasiel Puig was hitless. But then, the Dodgers nearly were too. San Diego's Jason Marquis had not allowed a hit until Skip Schumaker doubled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth at Dodger Stadium. He walked consecutive batters in the fifth to lose his bid for a perfect game. Marquis, 34, had allowed seven runs in the 8 2/3 innings of his last two starts, but has been in command throughout Wednesday. Puig is 0-for-3 with two groundouts and a strikeout.

Adam Wainwright, the St. Louis ace who will start Game 3 of the National League Championship Series against the Dodgers on Monday night, will forever have Dec. 13, 2003, etched in his mind, but not just because it was the day he was traded from the Atlanta Braves to the Cardinals. “The day I was traded, I was in Gainesville, Ga., sitting on the fireplace asking my future father-in-law for his daughter's hand in marriage, and the phone started ringing,” Wainwright said after the Cardinals, who have a 2-0 edge in the best-of-seven series, worked out in Dodger Stadium on Sunday.

Jim Tracy and the Dodgers will be getting ready for the playoffs next weekend, but not together. The Dodgers will make their fourth postseason appearance in six years. Tracy managed the Dodgers when that run started, in 2004. The only player remaining from that team is Jeff Weaver, who started Game 2 of the division series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Weaver was the losing pitcher. The winning pitcher was a then-obscure reliever named Dan Haren. The starter for St. Louis? Jason Marquis, now pitching for Tracy and the Rockies.

The Dodgers could not have anticipated in June, when they led the Rockies by 15 1/2 games, that this would be a showdown series in Colorado. They need not fret, however, as they are 10-2 against the Rockies this season, including 5-1 at Coors Field. The Dodgers also are not scheduled to face either of Colorado's top starters, Jason Marquis and Ubaldo Jimenez. Of their final 37 games this season, starting with the Colorado series, the Dodgers play 24 within the National League West. The Dodgers are 33-15 within the NL West, the best record of any major league team against its own division.
