Jason Medearis of Hart High, one of the top hurdlers in the state, signed a national letter of intent with the University of Wyoming on Monday. Medearis took recruiting trips to Wyoming and Montana--and was offered full scholarships to each--before choosing the Western Athletic Conference school. "The coaches were real cool and I like the campus," Medearis said. "The academics will fit me well out there."

High jumpers Jeremy Fischer of Camarillo High and Arthur Lloyd of Rialto Eisenhower and hurdlers Jason Medearis of Hart and Kenny Haslip of Pasadena Muir will renew their rivalries in today's Southern Section track and field championships at Long Beach Veterans Stadium. Fischer, the national outdoor leader in the high jump with a mark of 7 feet 4 inches, defeated Lloyd in the Arcadia Invitational (7-0 to 6-10) and Mt. San Antonio College Relays (7-3 to 7-2) last month.

Hart 50, Burroughs 3--Visiting Hart scored on seven consecutive possessions en route to a 47-point first-half lead and then settled for a 50-3 win over Burroughs. Hart quarterback Davis Delmatoff, who played only in the first half, completed 17 of 23 passes for 303 yards and four touchdowns as Hart took a 47-0 lead at halftime. Hart (8-0, 2-0) finished with 382 yards of total offense to 96 for Burroughs (0-8, 0-2).

Esa Sallinen of Burroughs High, a senior exchange student from Finland, cleared 16 feet 4 3/4 inches in the pole vault in the Foothill League track and field finals Wednesday at Birmingham High. Taking advantage of a persistent tail wind, Sallinen cleared 13-0, 14-0, 15-0, 16-0 and the magical--for him--five-meter height (16-4 3/4) on his first attempts before missing three times at 16-8. "This is unbelievable," Sallinen said. "Five meters has been a big goal of mine for a long time.

For Jason Medearis of Hart High, the wait was well worth it. Medearis, a junior, had been anticipating Tuesday's Foothill League dual meet against Canyon for several weeks because it pitted him against Canyon senior Kirk Sweetnam, who had never lost to Medearis. "I've been waiting all year for this," Medearis said after winning both hurdle races in the meet at College of the Canyons. "My coaches had him picked to win, so these wins are huge."

State track and field champions Jeremy Fischer of Camarillo High and Dolores Tuimoloau of Channel Islands will compete against some of the nation's best in the Golden West Invitational at American River College today in Sacramento. Fischer, the national outdoor leader in the high jump at 7 feet 4 inches, is one of seven entrants to have cleared 7 feet this season. On paper, Alemany High had about as much chance of defeating the Hart football team Friday night as those biplanes had of hurting King Kong. And on the field, the statistics didn't lie. Hart, The Times' top-ranked team in the region, reached out and crushed Alemany, 43-0, in a nonleague game at College of the Canyons. Hart quarterback Davis Delmatoff completed 11 of 22 passes for 377 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another score.

Jason Medearis, a senior receiver/defensive back at Hart High, suffered a dislocated left shoulder in the fourth quarter against Thousand Oaks on Friday and is out for the season, according to Hart Coach Mike Herrington. "It's a big blow," Herrington said. "He is one of our top offensive players and a Division I prospect."
