Years of amateur and professional TV-watching and the impressive title attached to my byline notwithstanding, I have never believed that I would last a minute as a television programmer. I know what I like, and usually why I like it, but what will float and what will sink on the great waters of commerce I admit to be beyond my ken. Still, had anyone in charge at Sundance Channel (now calling itself SundanceTV) asked me whether the network should follow its fine "Top of the Lake," "The Returned" and "Rectify" - slow, atmospheric, morally ambiguous, semi-rural stories of crime and family in which old wounds are opened and buried secrets surface - with a fourth such series, I might have suggested it was time for a big-city screwball romance or something with unicorns.

As "Game of Thrones" has grown in popularity, its characters have begun to become popular subjects for cosplay at conventions and during Halloween. But according to "Thrones" star Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen, one of the most popular characters on the show, there's a very R-rated trick to make her character's costume more authentic: "Take it off. " Yes, there's copious amounts of nudity on the HBO series, more than you're likely to find at your local Halloween costume party, but she did offer a suggestion a little more realistic for would-be Daeneryses: "Just a toy dragon will definitely help take that costume from being just another costume to being a 'Game of Thrones' costume.

If "Tempted" were a Victorian dime novel instead of a TV movie (9 p.m., Lifetime), the chapter headings would go something like this: "An Unexpected Death!" "A Long Journey to a Strange Land!" "Some Shocking News!" "The Farm's in Trouble!" "This Gent Is Big Trouble!" "Her Marriage Is in Trouble!" "The Children Are in Trouble!" "A Fateful Decision!"

"Bullet to the Head" is an adrenaline shot to your movie memory if the blunt, gleefully dumb, no-nonsense ways of '80s-style action flicks are your nostalgia drug of choice. Mayhem mavens Sylvester Stallone and director Walter Hill ("48 Hrs. ") make their debut as collaborators on this New Orleans shoot-'em-up, based on a graphic novel about a double-crossed hit man named Jimmy Bobo (Stallone) teaming with a young, idealistic cop (Sung Kang) to investigate a murder. ("Investigate" in these instances is a loose euphemism for "kill until no one's left")

Super 8 Paramount, $29.99; Blu-ray, $44.99 There hasn't been a Hollywood movie yet this year with a better first hour than "Super 8. " J.J. Abrams' sci-fi/actioner about teenage filmmakers in late-'70s Ohio understands how kids relate to each other and how much fun it can be to gather with friends and make something. All of this comes through in the early scenes of likable young folks shooting a zombie movie in and around their small town. "Super 8" loses some of its specialness in its second hour — when the amateur Spielbergs discover that an alien has been abducting their neighbors — but the spirit of camaraderie and youthful adventure never dims.
