There has been a lot of talk this week about pressure at USC football practices. A lot of pressure is expected to be put on the Trojans' defense Saturday by Oregon State's wishbone offense. Pressure? In a football game? Jason Oliver, USC free safety, allowed himself a little smile. Oliver knows pressure. He has a doctorate in pressure. And only now, three years after his world fell out from under him, is he beginning to feel like a normal person.

USC's senior free safety, Jason Oliver, hopes he can handle Penn State quarterback John Sacca on Saturday as well as he did Sacca's brother, Tony, in USC's 21-10 victory over Penn State in the Coliseum in 1991. Oliver intercepted Sacca three times in that game. * Penn State receiver Bobby Engram had an even better touchdown game than USC's Johnnie Morton last Saturday. Morton caught three scoring passes against Houston, but Engram caught four in the 38-20 victory over Minnesota.

It had been 20 years since the USC football team played in front of such a small crowd. Twenty years. But on the artificial surface of Parker Stadium, surrounded by a crowd smaller than he played before a few times in high school, Jason Oliver felt the world watching. And maybe the weight of the world coming off his shoulders--at least for one gloomy, overcast, typical Oregon football Saturday that seemed to Oliver more like an afternoon of sunshine.

Clinton Oliver is reluctant to brag about his big brother. "Then I wouldn't have any friends," he said. But if he were so inclined, the 10-year-old Clinton would have plenty to tell his fellow fifth-graders at Bakersfield's Laurelglen Elementary School. Clinton's brother, Jason, is a starting cornerback at USC. He intercepted three passes last Saturday night in a nationally televised victory over Penn State. The Pacific 10 Conference honored him Monday as its defensive player of the week.

Last fall I read in The Times about the dark days that had come to a young USC football player. I was moved to write a note to him in care of the USC athletic department. Several months later, I received a Christmas card signed, "Jason Oliver, 43." The cover was Boynton's cat hanging for dear life onto a Christmas tree. I knew then that Jason Oliver was a courageous, considerate and eloquent young man who would find his way through, and will probably brighten the lives of others as he goes.
